    Typing over underlines (Word 97)

I am developing a form and I would like to keep the underlines where they are and just type over them. Currently, I seem to be "pushing them right" as I test-fill the form...they won't stay put and let me type over them. I have been trying the insert or delete keys...I thought there was something about them....but that doesn't seem to work. This is a contract format. I tried field codes but want to try something simpler, like just having the underline stay in place. Thanks.

Put your "form" in a table. Make the cell borders transparent except for cells whery you enter data. Give those a bottom border. See attached doc.
(Or use the Drawing toolbar to draw a horizontal line below the text)

Re: Typing over underlines (Word 97)

OK...working on it...but when I do the cell text, it is stuck in the upper left-hand corner and I cannot seem to get it more aligned with the underline at the bottom as you have. I try the Alignment context menu, the Row height. Nothing seems to change it. So it looks silly, with the text distant from the line involved. Any suggestions?
And while we're at it, I keep getting this nasty message-box: Word has lost data due to a bad connection or missing floppy. Documents relying on this data are going to be saved and then closed" I started getting this last week and cannot figure out what is causing it. It occurs when I click the save icon. Have you any experience with what causes this issue? Thanks.

What's wrong with the accompanying screenshot? (row height fixed, vertical alignment bottom)

No idea about the other problem. It might be better to start a separate thread about it, since it has nothing to do with the underlines.

Another option (which I prefer, hugely, but maybe that's personal) is to use Excel rather than Word for forms.
If you don't know how much a particular filler-in is likely to put into a cell, it can be formatted with the 'shrink to fit' option.
Try protecting the sheet and unprotecting the cells inviting the responses, then the completer can go through the form using the tab key.
If you put instructions for completing the form in a text box with properties set to 'not print', it won't, er, print.
Wonderful what comments you get in this lounge, isn't it?

Another possibility you can play with,
    1. Set a tab stop where you want the underline to end.
    2. Position the insertion point marker where you want the underline to begin.
    3. Turn on underlining
    4. Press the spacebar once to create an underlined placeholder.
    5. Press the tab key to create the underline.

Now click anywhere in the first half of the underline to place the insertion point marker after the blank placeholder and start typing. As long as you remember to start typing after the placeholder, the underline will remain in place. You can even type beyond the end of the underline, which will move with your text to the right margin and will even wrap to the next line.

    Have fun,
    Steve

Re: Typing over underlines (Word 97)

Another advantage of using excel is that to some extent the form can be self-completing.
    Try typing
    15
into the attached - it will come up with my name. It gets this from a hidden sheet, from which I've removed all the other names and numbers for this purpose.
Type in some numbers, and it self-totals.
I've rubbed out the two macros - the 'add another row' does what it says, the 'copy to new file' pastes a picture of the form into a new spreadsheet, which has the merits that the file size gets a lot smaller, and it can't be edited (not without text boxes and things, anyway!)
    Just some thoughts.
I know that Word can do arithmetic in tables, but using a spreadsheet seems more intuitive?
Offering the form as a template (which the Lounge won't let me do) makes it harder for users to rub out the formulas.

FYI, you can upload templates to the Lounge in a zip format. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Nothing at all...I wasn't having any luck getting the captions to line up with the line. My alignment bottom didn't seem to move the text down closer to the border line. See the attached file. I cannot get the letters any closer to the border line you suggested to use as the basis for the form. Why might that be?

This would be easier to troubleshoot if you could paste the document with the table, rather than a screen shot of the word table.
Do you have "Space After" or non-standard line spacing set for your pargraph format?
Do you have a bottom cell margin in Table > Properties > Options?

Re: Typing over underlines (Word 97)

Nothing special about this document. It is now attached.
Red text is original Black above is the Table I am trying to replace it with.
    I have not Table/Properties/Options available
No, I don't have any Paragraph settings that I think are that way, subject to correction by knowledgeable users.
The Alignment of words doesn't help the "fill in the line" area on mine, altho on the sample it does. Note typed in data on address line. Won't fly.
Finding the settings for HV's example would be useful, but I can't seem to get at them. If I could, I'd just dup. 'em and hopefully get his results.

I changed two lines in your document so you could see how it was done. One possibility was to use the suggestion that Steve made in <post#=253309>post 253309</post#> above. See this article for more details.
    Cheers,

Re: Typing over underlines (Word 97)

Several of the cells to be filled in have their vertical alignment set to "Top".
In the cell with "And when you type in an address, it goes here", you have a paragraph mark (Enter) after the text, as you can see when you unhide non-printing characters. This paragraph mark pushes the text up. If you remove the paragraph mark (press Delete at the end of the text), you'll see the text move down nearer the bottom border of the cell.
