Word 97 loses formatting and tags on hidden info

One of my users is having a particularly strange thing happening in Word 97 (hmmm...is that new?). A week ago, she opened some WordPerfect docs in Word. Since then, she is experience formatting changes when opening existing Word docs, which changes the fonts, paragraphs, and tags on document information at the end of the document such as author id, fonts used, and ends with Word 8? It seems like Word is not recognizing the .doc extension and asks when we attempt to save, do we want to save it as a Word Doc? If we close without saving and re-open, all the formatting is back to normal and the document looks the way it should.

I think it may be a virus, though we've scanned with updated files. We've sent a new normal.dot file from another PC, after changing the old to "abnormal.dot" (borrowed that suggestion from another message). That didn't work. Any thoughts?? <img src=/S/headthrob.gif border=0 alt=headthrob width=15 height=15>

    Hi Denise,

It sounds like she is opening the documents as "Recover text from any file".

Take a look in File/Open and verify that Files of Type is set to Word Documents.

btw, if are wondering how you were able reopen it and it displayed correctly, I suspect you reopened the file from the Recently Used List under the File menu. This by-passed the Files of Type set in File/Open it opened as a Word Document.

    Cheers!
