Word Link to auto open in Word (6)

When browsing in Internet Explorer and trying to open a Word document via a link, it
opens the Word document inside the browser. I want to disable that function so that it will open up the document inside a new
MS Word window. This may actually be a MS Word issue but thought I would try it in this forum first. I know I can save the target and then open in Word but was wondering if there was an auto procedure that could be used.

I had the same problem with .pdf files but I was able to find the option in
Adobe Acrobat Reader that turned it off. (uncheck display PDF in browser under Web Browser Options in preferences.)

    Thanks for your help.

I believe this to be a setting in Windows Explorer (not IE or Word).

    From within Explorer:
Tools > Folder Options > File Types >
Locate the .doc extension, click on Advanced and DE-select 'Browse in same window" as per illustration below.
