Password Reset Disk (Windows XP Pro Sp1)

The Password Reset Disk tip in the Vol 3 No.17 issue is great! But I'm wondering... is the disk you create specific to the computer you created the disk on? That is, can the disk be used on any Windows XP PC or only the specific PC where it originated?

It can ONly be used on the Computer AND ACCOUNT that you made it on/with. You need a seperate disk for EACH account and machine.

    Hey Dave,

Does this still apply if the PC(s) in question are all on a domain?

Remember, the diskette you create will only let you run the PC, and has nothing to do with the network. I think Woody said that your domain administrator will have to assist you there. But, I admit that I have not tried using the diskette to start a computer on a domain yet.

This will work only on the local account, and any smart "domain administrator " would turn this off.

What about the new laptops that do not have a diskette drive. Can you do this off a USB flash memory key?

All I know is , when I made mine it ask for a diskette. Was very simple. But I don't think it was setup for anything other then a Floppy.
Nero's INCD, formats a CD to work like a Floppy for packet writing and it might work, but I'm not sure if it would see the CD if its looking for a floppy drive.

Re: Password Reset Disk (Windows XP Pro Sp1)

I finally got to try it. When you make the password disk it does not give an option of where to make the file. For some reason it assumed that C: was the floppy. I let it create the 2 KB file on the root of C: and then copied it to a USB key. I then restarted the computer and did not type in my password. When the Reset Password screen came up , there was a dropdown box of drives, of which one of the options was the USB key, and the wizard worked and I reset my password.
Bottom line you can do it!

Zave, that's excellent news. Thanks for testing that one out for the rest of us! What is the name of the 2KB file that you need to copy to the device?

The file name is "userkey.psw". In Explorer the file type description says "password backup", so it is pretty easy to find.
