Re: Constant Save of Normal.dot ( Word XP) Resolution (XP)

Thank you very much for posting this resolution.

When you say that it "is not a typical add-in template", how does one find it?

Constant Save of Normal.dot ( Word XP) Resolution (XP)

Thanks again for everyone's input. (Original thread is here. -Mod.)

SnagIt from Techsmith has a DLL file that attaches itself to Word, it was causing Word to recreate the Template every single time Word Started, and it wasn't easily viewable as it is not a typical add-in template. While no offense was intended in my posts, one should consider never telling someone to stop Word from warning you when a global template has been changed and asking if you want to save it. Too much damage could happen if you let things do whatever they wanted.

Again, thanks, and no offense was intended in the original posts.

My guess: DLL = COM Add-in.

To see your COM Add-ins in Word, you typically need to use Tools>Customize... to add it to a menu or toolbar.

While a good guess, the dll for SnagIt does not show up there. I believe it attaches itself through the Registry. It is stored in the SnagIt 6 installation folder and starts up with Word. There was some sort of glitch and the dll was confusing Word.

    Thanks,

Well, that's disturbing. This is the first time I've seen something change normal.dot that wasn't in the startup folder(s), a COM add-in, a temp file, a virus, or a corruption in normal.dot. If you actually track down where this ocurrs, please let us know.

Not really disturbing, as there are lots of DLL files that work with Office that don't show up in template or com add-in locations. And the good news is, Version 6.2.1 of SnagIt mentions it is a fix for the problem in their README file. I should have read that first. 6.2.1 is the fix.

I'm sorry, I edited the post, as I didn't quite write what I was thinking.

(Edited by Phil Rabichow on 15-May-03 15:35. second paragraph)
...and the fix is?

Thanks for the information about the COM Add-Ins that don't show up in the dialog box. I was unaware of that. I did some more exploring & someone found a KB article, which I used to update <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.
    Cheers,

    We'd make a good combination. I often don't think when I'm writing.
