    W2000 doc viewed on W2002 (W2000 and W2002/XP)

I wrote a document with 2 newspaper columns in it for a friend who has Word 2002 (XP?) (I use Word 2000) The document doesn't look the same on her computer screen. The whole thing is smaller and moved up and to the left. Instead of normal margins, the top and left ones are normal and the right margin is way bigger and so is the bottom margin. Even the footer has moved up. It's like the entire text has shrivelled up to about 75 per cent of its normal size.

What is going on here? Does anybody know what I am talking about?

Thank you for your kind help.

Has your friend got a different kind of printer? Sometimes you can get weird layout differences caused by different printers, or even different versions of driver for the same printer.

Is your friend looking at the doc in Normal view instead of Print Layout view?

If there are comments in the document it may be the way it is views with comment balloons. The balloons will show up in the right margin. Have her to go tools, options, track changes and uncheck the "Use balloons in Print and Web Layout" and see if that makes a difference.

There are no comments in the document at all and I don't know what balloons are. She does have a different printer than I do but this doesn't look like one of those "different printer" layout problems. To make sure I sent it to another friend with an HP printer (mine is a Canon and my friend's is an Epson) She has Word 2002, too and it looks the same weird shrunken size on her monitor and prints like that too. I'm attaching a little screen shot of what it looks like on mine and what it looks like on theirs.

Thanks for your help so far.

I don't have Word 2002, so I can only guess. Under File/Page Setup.../Margins tab, are the margins the same? Any gutter margin settings? Are there any View options (Tools/Options/View tab) that are different? On the Word 2002 machine, when you open the document, is Tools/Options/Compatibility Options tab set for Word 2000 compatibility? If you open up the Format/Column dialog box, any differences?

It appears to me from the above attachment that the two have different "Zoom scales" of the file. If one is to look at the footers on each you will see that they appear to be the same.

Do they in fact print out differently?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

It's sounding a lot like the problem discussed in this thread: Word 2002 Track changes (2002). Are there any tracked changes in the document?

I don't suppose it would simply be that, Under File, page Set-up, paper you have yours set to Letter and your friend's is set to A4?

Just a guess here because this same thing happened to me last Friday. Go to file, print and down in "Print What" does it say "Document" or "Document with Markups"? I kept having to switch mine back to "Document" otherwise it shifted and printed just the way the screen shot shows. Did you have her go to tools, options, track changes and "Use Balloons in ..."? Mine will also view the same when that is checked.
