Keyboard shortcut? (IE6)

Does a shortcut exist that will 'open in new window' but keeps the new window in the background? I know [SHIFT] +[Click] opens in a new window but the new window takes focus. I'm looking for something that would allow me to go down a list of links clicking on a number that I would like to visit but without having to go back to the original list.

If one doesn't exist is there a way I can create one?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but with the suspension of search <img src=/S/crybaby.gif border=0 alt=crybaby width=15 height=15> I'm stuck.

Could likely be done as a right-click context menu (open.window / blurr -- or something like that). But I know of no keyboard shortcut.

Thanks R2, can you point me in the direction of where I can learn to edit the context menu for IE. A few versions of Office ago, I recall doing this in excel but ... <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15>

    Hi Bowlie:
Avant Browser uses the IE engine & does exactly that. Ctrl+Shift+click opens up new windows on tabs & does it without changing the focus.

Alternatively, what I used to do before getting AV, was to Shift+click a link, then Alt+tab, & repeat until I had several windows open. Then I'd click the last one on the taskbar, then the one to the left, etc. until I got back to the first one. You can then read them in order & close them when finished. As you close them, Windows should just shift the focus to the next window.

I like that better than using the context menu.
    Hope this helps,

If you alternate Shift+click with Alt+Tab you can get IE to work opening those links and still quickly access the original window. But if you have prompting set (e.g., to run ActiveX controls), you'll have to check up on the new windows to make sure they are not waiting for you.

Ah, yes, and the same if you override the cookie handling in IE 6, as I've done. Fortunately, those prompts seem to pop up rather quickly. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Hi, Bowlie ~

The ability of Avant to Shift+Ctrl whilst clicking was the clincher to my switch since I like to do excatly what you describe: clicking a series of links in rapid succession while remaining on the page to continue reading, avoiding the painful switching-back-and-forth routine and have them open quietly in the background ready for my perusal as I finish the current page, double-click the bottom tab to kill a window, and continue on my way with the pages in an orderly fashion very conveniently as I have done recently, for example, with the 12-step Langalist backup.

Thanks to all who replied. I've downloaded Avante Garde and it seems to be working quite nicely. Interface isn't quite as nice as Safari but that doesn't run on my office PC. Still AV seems to be a nice enhancement to IE.

    Re: Keyboard shortcut? (IE6)

    Hey Bruce

I've been using Avant Browser for some days now. Thanks again. I've run into a couple of funnies and hope you might know whats going wrong.

In IE6 when I open a page with an input box (like this Reply page) the focus is on the box - I can start typing right away. But with AB I have to click on the box or press tab a few times to get to the box. Not a big deal but it does require me to think before I type ...

Javascript isn't working. For example if I click on '1-Click TagPanel' or 'Smilies' nothing happens.

I've gone to the internet options and have made sure that the 3 Java boxes under Microsoft VM are checked, and they are. I can't figure out why it works OK in IE but not in AB, when they use the same internet options.

    Any ideas you have will earn you a <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> or two and a big <big> <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15></big>

    Hi Bowlie ~

    Or maybe 3?? <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/cheersbeer.gif>

I have run into the occasional box-focus thing you mention - every now and then I must click, but that hasn't happened here.

As far as your javascripts, I bet you may need to:<UL><LI>'Tools' > 'Avant Browser Options...' > 'Browsing Options'<LI>Select them all (or not <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>)<LI>'Apply' > 'OK'<LI>(Double check your 'Internet Options' when done just to make sure please.)
Also, while you under there<UL><LI>'New Window' > 'Always create a new page for a pop-up page in the:' > 'Foreground'<LI>'Apply' > 'OK'
It works, it works ... <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15> <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15>

er, btw, what are you doing up so early, or is it so late <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15> You either are working much too hard, or are mega-jet-lagged.

Also, I didn't check on enable Active-X, our IT experts have recommended against it.

    Re: Keyboard shortcut? (IE6)

I've had the same problem with focus. (Well, my friends say I have that problem even when I'm off the computer <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>). If I decide to paste something into a message box or if I switch to another screen, the focus is no longer in the message box. I have written the developer about that, but I'm sure he's too busy to respond. I don't recall having that problem before I tried the Beta version, so maybe it's a bug that'll be fixed.

I still love AB so much that I've already donated money.
