Right Click in Excel (Office 2000)

All of a sudden when I pick a cell in a spreadsheet and right click, I do not get anything. I used to get a command selection including cut, copy, format, etc.

I cannot find anything in Help that discusses how to get this feature back.

Have you tried to Detect and Repair?

If Detect and Repair does not work, you can go into the Visual Basic Editor, insert a new module, and put the following code in it:

    Sub ResCellBar()
    Application.CommandBars("cell").Reset
    End Sub

Run the code and the right click should be back.

I tried Detect and Repair and it did not bring back the right click. I then tried your suggested Visual Basic code but it did not bring back the right click either.

Does right click work in any other applications (Word for example)?

If you have one, try a different mouse.

Depending on what mouse you have and what software is installed for it, the Mouse Control Panel may have a way of specifying what happens when you click the right button. If it does, make sure it is set for the default action.

Re: Right Click in Excel (Office 2000)

Right click seems to work in other applications (e.g. Word).

In Excel, right click does change the location of the current cell to the one where the mouse is, but does not bring up the additional menu of actions. I noticed when I was in the Visual Basic editor within Excel, that right click does bring up a menu of actions. So the problem seesm to be limited to the Excel spreadsheet itself. I have tried new (blank) spreadsheets and older ones but can't get right click to work in any.

The mouse is a Logitech bus mouse and all other mice I have are PS/2 so I can't try another one. But, based on the fact that right-click works in other applications and even in VBE in Excel, it does not seem like the mouse is the problem.

Re: Right Click in Excel (Office 2000)

Sounds like an add-in is pestering you.

Try starting Xl without any add-ins or hidden workbooks:

    Start, run,

    "c:Program fikesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /Automation

(Need the quotes, may have to change the path)

If the problem goes away, see what Add-ins (Tools, add-ins) are checked, uncheck one by one and restart XL each time. Thus find the problem one.

If none seem to be the cause, find your XLSTART directory, move the files in there away one-by-one, each time restarting XL.

If all of this fails, there may be a file specified in Tools, options, general, alternate startup file location. Clear that path and see if it helps.

Finally, delete or rename all files with an extansion of .XLB (rename the extension).

Re: Right Click in Excel (Office 2000)

No luck. I ran Excel without add-ins per your instructions - no change.

No alternate startup file location is specified.

I searched the computer for *.xlb files and none were found.

There was one file in the XLSTART directory. I renamed it .old and restarted Excel - no change.

This is becoming a tough one to locate.

Re: Right Click in Excel (Office 2000)

Changing the name of the file in XLStart to .old will not keep Excel from opening it. Excel will try to open everything in XLStart, and it will look at the file and recognize it as a .xlb file. You must move the file to a directory that is not a subdirectory of XLStart to keep it from being opened.

OK. I completely removed the file from XLSTART and then restarted Excel. No difference, still no right click.

Are you positively sure there is no *.xlb file anywhere on your PC? If so, I would suspect that you have no worksheet menu bar either.

Re: Right Click in Excel (Office 2000)

One other thing to try (I very much doubt it will help, but it will only take a minute):

Switch to the Visual Basic Editor (Alt+F11)
    Activate the Immediate window (Ctrl+G)
Type CommandBars("Cell").Enabled = True then press Enter.
Switch back to Excel and right click a cell to see if it worked.

Make sure you have checked the "Show all files" option (in Explorer) under Tools, folder options, view. It should then find the xlb file(s).

I use Search for *.xlb but no files are found.

When I right click on the menu bar area in Excel, it says that I have standard and formatting menu bars checked (and they display as usual).
