Avant Browser Beta (Avant Browser V7.0.5.0.2)

    Hi All:
Anyone using any of the Beta versions of Avant Browser? I haven't tried them, but I'm curious as to feedback. There have been at least 3 updates.

    Hi, Phil ~

    Man, you are all over this! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I took a look at it and don't see a reason yet to try it. The way I look at it is that all browsers are betas. I feel that I am pushing my luck as it is and just counting my blessings I have a browser w/ great features not found elsewhere that work & stable thus far. <img src=/S/cloud9.gif border=0 alt=cloud9 width=25 height=23>

Re: Avant Browser Beta (Avant Browser V7.0.5.0.2)

    Hi Phil:

I have upgraded to the latest beta and have had zero problems. I upgraded because:
    - ability to sort favorites list vs. alphabetical.
    - ability to startup browser with a group of pages on separate tabs vs. one start page.
    - the promise of speed. It is noticeably faster!

I know you've probably seen this page already but for those that want a quick link to what the new versions of AB bring, here it is... What's New In AvantBrowser

BTW, Bruce and others have done an exceptional job of highlighting the features of AB. But one feature that I don't see mentioned alot (and one of my favorites), is that this new browser eliminates the need for an additional popup stopper. And it also eliminates the need for an "internet browser cleaner". AB will clear cookies, temp files, search words, histories, recent pages, typed addresses, etc. when the browser closes or at the click of a toolbar button. This feature is customizable, meaning that you can pick & choose what gets cleared and when it gets cleared. <font color=blue>Very Nice!</font color=blue>

Hi Ricky (& Bruce & other AB users):
Have you noticed that when using AB &
    1. You paste something in a reply (or any fill-in form, for that matter), or
    2. Switch away from the browser window & then back

that your cursor loses it's focus? i.e. You can't continue typing.

    HI, Phil ~

No pasting problems at all. I have noticed that I have to click in a reply box or what have you if I've switched away, but then that has always been the case even with IE right now in this very window as well as every browser I have used as far as I can recall. I assumed that was normal. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Hi Bruce:
I don't have a pasting problem; it's just that after I paste something in a reply OR switch away, I lose focus. It doesn't happen with Netscape, Mozilla (& I'm not sure, but I don't think it happened with IE). I use the keyboard to paste with a clipboard extender & so I notice when I have to take my hands off the keyboard & use the mouse. In fact, I don't recall it happening with the previous version of AB. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Re: Avant Browser Beta (Avant Browser V7.0.5.0.2)

I've been a Netscape user for a long time, then last week downloaded AB to give it a try. AB is turning into my "browser of choice" because of the multi-tab layout and the real speed in running. And, like T. Ricky says, it includes its own pop-up blocker. At the moment, AB has blocked 8 ads, probably for that little camera and a few "Your a winner" ads. I've been using it for about one week, and have no complaints.

Phil, I'm the guy who told you a few months ago of the cool features in Netscape 7. Well, most of them are right here. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

These sound like the same reasons I now use Mozilla!

    Hi Chris:
Except that by Ctrl+Shift+click on a link, you open a new tab in the background with AB. I look at a forum & see 7 unread threads, click on 4-5 to open in the background. By the time I finished clicking, the first one or two have loaded & I can read them immediately. If only I didn't have this "lost focus" when I paste problem.

Re: Avant Browser Beta (Avant Browser V7.0.5.0.2)

    Hi, Phil ~

I guess I don't see how the cursor focus is really a problem since it is only a click away, <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> but considering the fact that no one browser holds all the features one wants/needs, it is surely outshined by all the non-fluff and useful features AB contains, yes? <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I am curious of your thoughts w/ your experience so far on the 8.0 version - would you recommend I switch yet or is there really not much difference - in your opinion?

I also open tabs in the background, using the CTRL+click method. In the preferences dialog, there's an option to enable "loading in the background", or something to that effect.

I also LOVE the sidebar in Mozilla, which has allowed me to add other useful tools such as the http://www.blogrolling.com features for listing my favourite weblogs, and if they've been updated recently.

    Hi Chris:
Well, I'll be. Just when I thought I had found my dream browser. Never knew that you could Ctrl+Click in Mozilla...until now. BlogRolling looks interesting, but I know very little about web pages. Do you know if this can be used with IE? Do I need my own web page to make it useful?
    Thanks,

Re: Avant Browser Beta (Avant Browser V7.0.5.0.2)

I'm not sure if there's a plugin or any such code for IE specifically..... but if there isn't, creating a small webpage, such as a free one from Geocities (or the like), and putting the code there, you'd be able to create a "favourite" or homepage which would act like the sidebar in Mozilla (or Netscape).

I started "blogging" myself late last year, and found the fine utilities at http://www.blogger.com to be very good for a starting place. You can see a sample of what can be done by a "newbie" at the link in my signature.
