    Auto-numbering fix (Any, I think)

I remember learning a long time ago that one can fix Word's auto-numbering bug by using auto-correct entries. I cannot find this info. anywhere anymore. Does anyone know how to do this? Specifically I remember that you could, instead of applying a numbered list -type style, get Word to:
    -replace 1] with 1
-replace x] with a 2, 3, 4, or whatever number in a list that it was.
You'd then just have to "Update fields" when you made changes to that list later.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

Perhaps this (the link is meant for RoboHelp, but the technique can be used in all Word documents): Autonumbering with RoboHelp and Microsoft Word.
