Save Address List (Word 2002 (XP))

This is a follow-up to my question posted earlier. When you are going through the mail merge wizard and you choose to create a new recipient/address list, you are forced to save it. When you save it, the only option you are given as .mdb. I think this may be a screw up on Microsoft's behalf because if you wanted to open a data source you can choose from many different types. Attached are screen shots showing what I am talking about. I am trying to find out through coding, or the registry if there is a way to have just a regular Save As... dialog box instead that will allow the user to choose the Save As Type...

Microsoft has changed the way mail merge works considerably in Word 2002. They probably decided that it was easier for the user to have no choice. <!mskb=294688>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 294688<!/mskb> states

The Mail Merge Recipient dialog box creates an address list (.mdb) for the data file.

Of course, you are free to create a data file before starting the mail merge process; you can create it in any of the acceptable file formats.

Ideally, that is what we do want users to do, create the data source first. We were just trying to find a way for those that don't "follow directions" to do it using Word's form.
How dare they take away our right to choose.

The changes to mail merge (compared to Word 2000 and before) have upset a lot of users, just like the modifications to Track Changes. I haven't seen the beta version of Word 2003, so I don't know if changed it back there, but I'm not optimistic...

    FOUND AN ANSWER!!!

Sorry, just had to shout. You can revive the old Mail Merge Helper, but it is hidden. Go into customize, to customize toolbars and go to the commands tab. Then, click on All Commands (not Mail Merge, which is where it would have made sense to put it) and scroll down to MailMergeHelper. Add that button back to the toolbar and you get the original Mail Merge Helper and all the options of ways to save the data source!! I am giddy with excitement!
