Auto Dial Problem (1)

Hi all,( first time here)
Hope someone can help with an annoying problem I have.
I have a client that has two winxp Pro machines, they are networked together and share a dial-up internet connection using an external modem connected to PC 1.
The problem I'm having is that when ever the second PC is turned on, the modem will auto dial at random times, any where from 10-30 minutes for no obvious reason.
Both PC's only have the standard basic winxp programs installed, as they arrived from the supplier, and Microsoft Office.
I have disabled the auto dial in the internet connections on both PC's but they will still dial up on their own.
Any suggestions as to where else to look or how to fix this problem ( they wont pay for a permanent connection)

Thanks,
Wayne.

Something is causing it. But of course, you knew that. Are automatic updates also disabled? And this happens only when PC #2 is turned on and logged in?

Look in the Event logs for both machines, particularly the one with the modem attached. You should see something that indicates what initiated the connection.

Thanks for the fast answer, The system log shows that "Event Manager" is what started the dial up. That is all has shown up and that it is connected to COM2 which is the correct port for the modem. It does not give any other details as far as I can see as to what program actually started it. I forgot to mention also that they have a program for their stock levels on both PC's also. But the vendor says that the updates are sent on floppy disc, and require to be installed manually.

Updates to the program, perhaps - but wouldn't a stock quote program need to dial out and get updated stock quotes? You might try killing that program just to see.

Re: Auto Dial Problem (1)

Hi again, the stock level that I was referring to was not in money sence, but as in the number of items that the customer has in stock. He owns/runs a manufacturing business and uses the program to account for the number of items left in stock, or used, example 100 lengths of 4x2 timber.
I will have a look at the auto update for windows as suggested and see if that fixes the problem. One other item I came across was windows media player , if I am correct that has an updating feature also, so that may be worth a look at also.
Its got to be something easy...( famous last words )

Regards,
Wayne
