    Preview pane and viruses (All)

Are you apt to get viruses if you use the preview pane? If yes or no, could you explain to me why in easy terms, especially if it is no.

    Thank you.

Re: Preview pane and viruses (All)

As I understand it, if a virus can be triggered by simply opening an email, it will be triggered by the preview pane, as this effectively 'opens' the email to preview it. Since viruses generally come in as attachments, however, I have a rule that puts anything with an attachment in a special folder, so I can turn off the preview pane before I look at anything that's in that folder.

Having said that, I also have Norton AV, Zonealarm and Mailwasher, all of which help to trap the baddies, and I can't remember the last time anything bad got through as far as OE!

The problem is with HTML e-mail. Code included in that type of mail can do all sort of things on your computer like deleting files, insert a virus.

So my advice : NO preview pane NEVER, and when you receive a strange e-mail just delete it, you'll be much safer.
