    Windows folder view

Recently, the order in which files initially appear when I open an Explorer Window changed from alphabetical to date order. I have gone into the "Folder Options --> View" settings and tried various things, including resetting everything to Windows defaults. This has put things back in alphabetical order when I access files directly from Explorer. However, when I open a File Save or File Open dialog in any application, everything still appears sorted by date. I have to resort before I can find what I'm looking for. I'm using Windows 98 2nd Edition. How can I get things back to normal?

    Re: Windows folder view

If you click on the header "Name" above your list of files, they'll fall back to Alphebetical Order.

    Err..

Try re-starting your machine after the following:

    Double click on 'My Computer'
Click on the "Name" header to make everything Alphebetical
    Goto View/Folder Options
On the View Tab, click on the 'Like Current Folder' Icon.
    Click 'Apply,' then 'Ok.'

    Hope that helps!

    Re: Windows folder view

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've tried that. Windows does not seem to remember the new settings -- it keeps reverting to the date order. I'm wondering if there is some registry edit that is needed.

    Re: Windows folder view

    Hi Jon:

In these SaveAs or Open dialog boxes, on the toolbar (if you're talking about Office apps), there is an icon of a table, 2nd from right. Click the drop down, go to arrange icons, & choose your order. This order can be separate from Windows Explorer.

Sometimes the settings don't always stick in folder options. I've had the best luck with folders by right clicking & choosing the sort order, then Auto Arrange. When you close, hold the Ctrl key down when you click the "x". Then reboot.

    Also, get TweakUI at

On the Explorer tab it has a place to tick "Save Explorer Window Settings".

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Windows folder view

    Phil-

Thanks for your suggestions. I'd been trying various combinations of them repeatedly, except for TweakUI, which I hadn't thought of. I already had TweakUI installed, with "Save Explorer Window Settings" enabled, so I tried diabling it, rebooting, and re-enabling it -- it didn't seem to make any difference.

The upshot of all this is that about 80% of my aggravation has been taken care of. Windows Explorer and the Office 2000 programs' Open/Save dialogs seem to be behaving themselves again. However Open/Save in Eudora (v. 5) and Internet Explorer (v. 5.0) still insists on presenting files and folders in date order. I can change it each time, but the order reverts immediately when I go to a different folder. Do you have any other thoughts on this?

Give this a try, READ ALL befor doing.
    MS Knowledge Base Article: <A target="_blank" HREF=http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q233/5/26.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=Q233526 &rnk=1&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=IE>
Q233526 - Contents of the Open and Save As Dialog Boxes Sorted Incorrectly </A>
To resolve this issue, set the ShellState value in the registry to the default value. To do so, use Registry Editor to view the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorer

If needed, edit the "ShellState" value to match the following value:
    1C 00 00 00 A7 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00

NOTE: You do not have to restart your computer for these changes to take effect.

Re: Windows folder view - Thanks!

    Dave-

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The registry edit fixed the problem. I spent a long time searching the MS Knowledge Base, but never came up with that article.
