    Exchange/Outlook Wizard (Access 2000/XP)

I have spent hours uninstalling, reinstalling, scouring knowledgebases to try to find out why - in spite of the help facility telling me it will work - the Exchange/Outlook link wizard will not start when I try to link an outlook table.

Is there a work around to manually do what the wizard would have done? There are no clues as to why it can't start, just the same error message time and again with different access databases (just in case that was the problem).

    Any ideas? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

    Two questions:

    1. What was the error message?

    2. Do you have access to an Exchange server or are you running Outlook locally and connecting to an ISP?

Error Message says "Microsoft Access can't run the Outlook/Exchange Wizard. Make sure you have Outlook, Outlook Express or Exchange Server installed and that you can log in to your email account."
I'm running Outlook Express locally and can log into my POP3 email with no problem.

I don't have OXP on this machine, but if this is a wizard to help you connect to Exchange, then you will have to have an Exchange Server to connect to. I've never been able to use the O2k equivalent on my laptop because I'm not connected to a network, only through DSL to my ISP. Logging into your POP3 mail just means you have an internet connection, not that you have access to an Exchange server.

According to the online help, as long as you have outlook installed the wizard works. It works on the address book which is local, so assume that they lump it with exchange because of similar file format.

Several people have reported the same problem in the Microsoft Newsgroups, without getting a definitive answer. Apparently it stumps the MVP's that are active there...

I'm surprised it includes Outlook Express in the error message. The accounts in OE are not the same as the accounts that Outlook use. You can setup your Outlook accounts through your control panel (should be a mail icon). From what I know, the Outlook/Exchange Wizard uses the profile information in that to allow import/links. I don't know how to setup a link to OE through that.

Alright, so what do I do about getting email addresses into outlook from access without doing the copy and paste thing? What I need to do is to add them to a group email list. Ideas? <img src=/S/igiveup.gif border=0 alt=igiveup width=31 height=23>

Here is some code that creates a distribution list and adds members to it. It needs a reference (in Tools | References...) to the Outlook 10.0 Object Library (10.0 is for Outlook 2002, for Outlook 2000 it would be 9.0), and you'll get a security warning that code is trying to access Outlook.

    Sub CreateDList()
    Dim olApp As Outlook.Application
    Dim olDList As Outlook.DistListItem
    Dim olMail As Outlook.MailItem
    Dim olRecipient As Outlook.Recipient

    ' If Outlook is running
    Set olApp = GetObject(, "Outlook.Application")
' If Outlook is not running, use this instead:
    ' Set olApp = CreateObject("Outlook.Application")

    ' Create distribution list
    Set olDList = olApp.CreateItem(olDistributionListItem)
' Dummy e-mail item needed to create recipients
    Set olMail = olApp.CreateItem(olMailItem)

' Create some recipients, verify them and add them to list
    Set olRecipient = olMail.Recipients.Add("Doe, John")
    olRecipient.Resolve
    olDList.AddMember olRecipient
    Set olRecipient = olMail.Recipients.Add("Roe, Jane")
    olRecipient.Resolve
    olDList.AddMember olRecipient

' Name and save distribution list
    olDList.DLName = "Test Group"
    olDList.Save

    ' Clean up
    Set olRecipient = Nothing
    Set olMail = Nothing
    Set olDList = Nothing
    Set olApp = Nothing
    End Sub

Okay, not good. Did a little research for you, and here is what I found.

You CAN communicate with OE programmatically. However, everything I found that does so is for C++. Not fun. The .dll that is used is wab32.dll, which is probably stored in C:Program FilesCommonSystem (at least it is for me). Now, how do you use it? You got me. I got a little further, but VB won't allow me to set that .dll as a reference, so it's not an ActiveX .dll, which means you'll need to interact with it strictly through API calls.

However, I can start pointing you in the right direction on this. Using the MSDN, look for WABOpen or WABOpenEx. That should get to the pages that talk about dealing with an OE WAB file, which is the Address book.

    Does this help at all?

It probably would help if I was a 'REAL' developer! I've moved from a link table wizard to some serious coding here! Looks like it might be a little (!) beyond my current abilities.

Yes, certainly not an easy task. Do you have Outlook at all?
