shared documents on network open VERY slowly (97/XP)

We are in the process of moving from Office97 to OfficeXP, we also have a mixture of 98, ME, 2000 and XP operating systems - quite a combination when they get mixed together but ALL suffer this recent problem.

a document that has been in existance for days, weeks, months or even years in some cases will take minutes (it ranges from 3 upwards <img src=/S/snore.gif border=0 alt=snore width=32 height=15>) to open when chosen from windows explorer. We have found that, if the content is copied out (yes, just select all and Ctrl +C) and pasted into a new document which is then saved into exactly the same network folder, the problem does not affect the new document. The original still exhibits the slow opening though.

does anyone have any ideas please? We are thinking it may be something t do with scripts but are not sure where to start....

    TIA

    Further Info....

we have identified the part of the script that is causing the problem. by removing the ampersand from this line
    <o:Company>Cornwall amp Devon Careers</o:Company>
    to read
    <o:Company>Cornwall and Devon Careers</o:Company>
    and removing these lines entirely:

    <w:ActiveWritingStyle Lang="EN-US" VendorID="8" DLLVersion="513" NLCheck="0">1</w:ActiveWritingStyle>
    <w:ActiveWritingStyle Lang="EN-GB" VendorID="8" DLLVersion="513" NLCheck="0">1</w:ActiveWritingStyle>

the document opens instantly. I am now looking for ideas as to what we can do to get around this. to get to the script we have to open the document (many hundred x 3 minutes = lots of work for somebody!) or install something to ensure compatability on newer machines.

It does appear that some PCs are not affected - whether it is old office or old OS we are not yet sure.

this the from the start of the script to the end of the if statement that contains the last offending line...

Is the problem only with Word documents that you Save As HTML from Word? I know that feature has "issues," but I wasn't aware of this particular problem.

no, it is not restricted to Word, Excel documents are certainly affected, PowerPoint has not been raised/discovered (yet?). these are straight .doc and .xls files nothing clever in them at all, they are just document on a shared drive for all / many to use for reference.
