Prefetch unfetched (XPPro SP1)

I have 'EnablePrefetcher' set to '3', but after clearing the 'Prefetch' folder, it no longer prefetches. I don't seem to notice any degradation in performance, but think it may be prudent to have it operable. I tried setting the values to '0', '1', '2' and even deleting the original key, but still no 'Prefetch' fetching.

    Bueller??

Bruce, have you tried using BootVis to optimize and rebuild the prefetch cache?

    Hi, Mark ~

I quit using BootVis because each time I did, I would lose the 'Prefetch'. Now it happens when I manually clear it.

Bruce go to this page and scroll down to "WinXP Prefetch Clean And Control" it is a freeware program that gives you the control your looking for. It is a great little program.

    Hi, Mark ~

I was finally able to get the 'Prefetch' rebuilt by perfoming a manual online defrag, then a boot time defrag and finally temporarily re-enabling the 'Task Scheduler' service.

Ah, hadn't thought about that - I believe it requires the Task Scheduler service to work anyway. Glad you got it fixed!

Yep - that is why I was without the 'Prefetch'. I always keep the 'Task Scheduler' set to manual. Other apps seem to start it when it is needed, but for BootVis to work properly, it seems it must be literally manually started. Thanks for reminding me.
