files and folders now in CAPITAL LETTERS?

    FrontPage 2002 (XP)

A whole load of my files and folders within my web have now got capital letters? I tend to do everything in lowercase and yesterday noticed this change - not done by me deliberately? My PC has one hard drive with two partitions so that I can boot either into Win98SE or WinXP Pro, FAT32 and NTFS respectively. I have a second hard drive (FAT32) where all my docs including wwwroot with all the FP files within.

The capitals may have happened after I edited my website in WinXP and then reboot to go into Win98 to upload my files via FTP (I've not setup FTP on my WinXP partition as yet) - could it have been this that caused most folder and files TO BECOME CAPITALS.

As you may guess, lots of my links don't work now because index.htm is not the same as INDEX.HTM

After booting into WinXP Pro (NTFS) and viewing the files on my second drive (FAT32) they are all showing in lowercase as they should be? I've now rebooted and gone into Win98SE (FAT32) and the files and folders within the same wwwroot folder are displayed in Windows Explorer as UPPERCASE?

At least I guess I can continue within WinXP and everything should work, but it would be nice to know why this has happened?

Isn't there a setting in W98 to set viewing preferences - allowing mixed upper and lower case or something? It may be in Explorer > Tools > Folder Options...

As for index.htm not being the same as INDEX.HTM - are you sure?

On a Unix/Linux webserver, the filenames are case sensitive. I got burned when I migrated from a Frontpage enabled IIS server to a Linux host. I can't begin to tell you how many links got broken from previously sloppy coding.

Microsoft products are indifferent to case names on a webserver. I recall the setting in W98 that you're talking about, which was "Allow all uppercase filenames" - my best guess here is that it makes an assumption for reasons that are known only in Redmond. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Ian, did you know that you can connect directly to your FTP server from within Windows Explorer in XP? There is an add-in that enables the same functionality for 98 but it's not standard in the shipping OS. The built in FTP abilities aren't any more than basic - no file queuing, etc - but at least you can do it without rebooting in a pinch.

Re: files and folders now in CAPITAL LETTERS?

Win98 Explorer's setting Tools, Folder Options, View, "allow all uppercase names" was ticked, so this did show any file or folder that was created all uppercase as uppercase. Removing that tick now shows all my files and folders in lowercase. However, viewing my folders within FP2002 still shows several as uppercase, so Explorer is not showing them in their true state?

Anyway, I think I'll need to create a few more new pages and folders and keep an eye on what happens - looks like I may need to edit a few of my older pages that are seen in lowercase at my remote server, but are not uppercase on my local machine. Thanks for the feedback.

I didn't realise that, but I'll install WS_FTP Pro which is the software that I know - just hadn't got around to setting it up when I noticed my troubles with upper and lowercase settings.
