Splitting a large file

I have a large file (921MB) which I need to record on to CD. It is obviously too large to fit on one CD and it is already compressed and can't be compressed anymore. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to split it up into 2 parts so I can record it onto 2 CDs?

Probably the easiest way, IMHO, is to use Winzip. Compress it and Winzip has an option to split it under the Actions menu. By doing this, you also get a CRC check to ensure the consistency of the split file.

Re: Splitting a large file

Most of the xxxZIPs enable you to span media, but this used to be necessary only for diskettes!
The lateral thinking route might be to buy a DVD writer, but this could be expensive :
a) if you only want to do it once,
if the recipient doesn't have a DVD reader,
c) your files are going to get bigger than 4,7 GB

I think we have now got away from the views of a couple of years back, which indicated that, because CPUs were getting faster and faster, they would soon run out of data to process, so we ought to be directing our efforts to creating more data, in order to keep them fully occupied... <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

Re: Splitting a large file

That was my first thought too. However, I tried it and WinZip doesn't recognise my CDRW as removable media and therefore greys out the 'Multiple Disk Spanning' option.

I suppose I could try PKZIP and force it to span disks by using the appropriate switch...?

OK, I tried PKZIP (for DOS) and no luck there either. It also doesn't recognise my CDRW as removable media and refuses to span disks.

I have found a program called RZSplit to be very usefull for splitting files. Worth the $12.00 it costs.

Aye, I was thinking that you could do it directly to the hard drive, provided you have enough space. I imagine your CDRW is not available unless you have INCD or another similar application running that treats the drive as a removable disk.

Hi Adam

A Google, or other such, search for a "file splitter" application should provide a substantial number of downloads available, many of them free.

Have a Great day!!!

Hello Adam,

If you've got WinZip 8.1, it has a 'Split' option under the 'Actions' menu. Split allows you to split a file into pre-determined sizes, including 650 & 700 Mb for CD-ROMS, or you can specify your own sizes.

Cheers

Re: Splitting a large file

Hi, I guess the problem here was solved but thought it worthwhile to add that I have used a free program called HJ Split for many years now and have found it simple and 100% reliable. It splits and joins files easily and allows setting spans. Best of all, it is merely a .EXE ( nothing to install ). If you are making the discs for someone else, include the .EXE on one of the discs and the other party can use it to join the files. Man, does this sound like an ad or what ? I should be in marketing. Anyway, hope this helps readers.
