Sounds weird. Can you attach a sample document (for example your four-page document with randomly generated text) to a post? That would enable Loungers to investigate it.

I'll attach a copy of the four page document.

The problem is that you have pages being vertically centered - do the File / Page Setup command and change the Vertical Alignment on the Layout tab to Top and you should be fine.

Your correction worked. Thank you for your assistance. It also solved the problem on the large document.

Even though it solved my problem, I would like to know why having that box reading 'Center' made the header box larger.

Actually, it didn't make the header bigger, it just centered the text on each page in the middle of the page between the header and the footer, and since there was only a little text on the last page it made it appear that the header was larger. To see what I mean paste in a few more lines at the end and watch it adjust.

When the page is centered vertically, the header box is expanded to the maximum size available, but the footer box isn't, although it will grow if more text is entered into it. Why? I don't know. Does it matter a lot?

Think of it this way: the top line of the box is set at the "Header Margin" (the From edge setting); the left and right show the section's left and right margins, respectively; and the bottom line displays at the section's Top margin. The Top margin is a minimum distance: if the header takes up more than the amount of space assigned to it in Page Setup (Top margin minus Header margin), the Top margin (bottom of the box) -- and the actual text of the page -- will be pushed down the page.

In the case of a page that is vertically centered, the header box expands to take over the space yielded by the page text (down to its "actual" Top margin), just as it does when there is text in the header box. So it's kind of consistent in representing "space occupied" by the header.

This description does seem to break down in another situation: You can force text to begin at a particular point using an absolute setting (add a - sign before the number). In that case, the header box expands to cover the entire page.

I'm not sure there ever will be a coherent theory for such things...

I had a problem. You gave me a solution to the problem. Probably most important of all, you also explained what caused the problem. Now I know more about the application, and you
