    Running-total page numbering

In Word 97, I have a 33 page document that has running total page numbering (Page 1 of 33) in the footer. After I've saved the document and go back into it, the footer now reads Page 33 of 1. What's up with that??

    Re: Running-total page numbering

To my knowledge this is typical of using the insert autotext option "page x of y" from the Header/Footer toolbar. A quick "update field" will fix it, either a right click on the "field" and choose "update field" or use your F9 key. The danger is though, that it often continues to "reappear" whenver it pleases. You can turn the "update fields" on as a print option, such that prior to printing all of your fields are updating, saving you, if you forgot or in this case didn't realize it was necessary. (File-Print-Option - Update Fields).

Alternately, and less of a hassle to avoid this is to use the more manual technique of typing the Word "Page", use the "insert page button", type space "of" space, and then use the "insert number of pages" button. I've never had that problem surface using this technique, albeit more time consuming.

This is an old problem. You can go to Print Preview 2 or 3 times. or Print your pages in reverse. Another way is to look at Word count. Anything to force repagination.

    Hi Sue:

As Panderson & Doug have said, there are a few workarounds. It is a bug. For all the "workarounds", see

    Hi Sue,

This bug was "kinda" fixed in the Post Service Release for Word 97 (aka SR3). This fixed the printing problem, but not the display problem. The bug wasn't truly fixed until Office 2000 SR1.

SR3 is a combination of several patches and fixes such as the Mail Merge Security Update, Leap Year Update, and the ODMA Update Altogether they fix about 50 additional bugs. The link provided for SR3 contains a list of what was fixed.

You need to have SR1 and SR2 installed before installing this Post Service Release.

Here is information and where you can download each one:
    SR1: <A target="_blank" HREF=http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/articles/sr1fact.htm>http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/articles/sr1fact.htm</A>
    SR2: <A target="_blank" HREF=http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/downloadDetails/sr2off97detail.htm>http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/download...off97detail.htm</A>

Post Service Release (aka Word SR3):

Thanks panderson, your second alternative is the one I went with on this project.

    Re: Running-total page numbering

    Hi Sue,

FWIW, typing and inserting the fields for Page X of Y instead of using the AutoText entry will only show the correct field result at that time.

If your document repaginates then you are back to the same problem.

If you don't want to install the Service Release(s) to correct the problem then use the following as a work around:

Go to Tools/Options/Print and turn on "Reverse Print Order" and "Update Fields".

    Cheers!
