Convert XP to Win98

    Hi there,

    I have just purchased a PC from my local computer store, it has come preloaded with Windows XP. I wanted to put Windows 98 on it, I have tried to install Windows 98 however when the install was going through the final setup stage 3 error messages were displayed all stating that the file/s were either corrupt or not copied. The files were oeimport.dll , msoe.dll and wab32.dll the files are in there respective directories so I assume they have been copied, therefore the file must be corrupt. I have replaced these files with the same file from another pc but that doesnt seem to work either. The problem with the files is causing outlook and explorer not to work. Anyone have any ideas? please help......

    Why would you want to replace WinXP with Win98?

    oeimport.dll=Outlook Express Mail Import & Export
    msoe.dll=Outlook Express Library
    wab.dll=address book

    You can download new Dll Files Here. Or Here.

    I'm with Cowboy on this one. You don't know what you're missing if you don't give XP a try! Did you do a clean install of the Win98? I've never done a WinXP replace with Win98 but I would guess installing 98 "on top of" XP would be a disaster waiting to happen.....

    You need to format the hard drive and do a clean install of Windows 98.

    But, I agree with the others, "WHY"?

    Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Convert XP to Win98

    Thanks for the input guys, the reason for replacing xp is that the pc is connected to a win98 network and i wanted to keep all user on the same oe, however i have since found out that the particular pc we purchased (an Acer ) cannot support the win98 oe, therefore im stuck with one user on xp and the rest on win98. i guess thats what you get for buying a pc off the shelf from a retailer..... Thanks again for your input.

    Really? The PC can't support 98? I'd think it would, 98 runs on just about everything, although on newer hardware it requires a little massaging. I'm going to keep my thoughts on Acer as a company to myself, though.

...we purchased (an Acer ) cannot support the win98...

    Well, I'd bet that what you heard is their way of saying "WE" won't support you if you change the way we DELIVERED the computer. Like Mark, I'll keep my comments about Acer to myself, BUT I think you won't regret it eventually. You'll "learn" to prefer XP before too long!
