    Can't download .exe files (IE 6.0 SP-1)

I have a friend who is running XP Pro SP-1 and IE 6.0. He has all the latest updates, etc. He does not have a firewall running. But he is running NAV 2002. He can download everything successfully except ".exe" and "MP3" files. He said he contacted MS but after an hour on the phone, the tech said he said he couldn't help and would have someone else call him, which never happened. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

He says it seems that most of the files get anywhere from 75-80% downloaded and then it just stops. He doesn't get any error messages.

I still feel the file size is most significant. I know of no way that IE can exert a file extension specific problem like this...

    R2,

Sorry to disappoint you but this man has tried downloading files from 500K to 3 megs without success.

I don't have a solution, but you could have him stop running NAV (or anything else except systray, Explorer, & whatever is necessary to connect to the Internet) & try downloading something safe. Maybe NAV has a setting that prevents some files from downloading, although I'm not aware of any such setting.

Did he say when this started? Has it been doing this from day one? If not we need to find out if he added something or did something before this started.

    Jeff,
Home or work? Broadbad or dialup? Connection problems? Does it hang with the download progress window open or does the window close? Same for multiple sites? Does changing the extension that is being saved make any difference?

    Hi, Jeff ~

This may be caused by a checked security setting:<UL><LI>IE > 'Tools' > 'Internet Options...'<LI>'Advanced' tab<LI>Scroll down to 'Check for signatures on downloaded programs' and uncheck it<LI>'Apply' > 'OK'[/list]

    Joe,

    1) Home setup
    2) Cable
    3) No other connection problems
    4) Download window is open when it hangs when the file is about 70% to 90% complete.
    5) Happens at all sites.
    6) Changing file extension makes no difference.

NAV disabled makes no difference. The problem has been there since day one.

Tried all the other suggestions and no change.

Re: Can't download .exe files (IE 6.0 SP-1)

Well, when all else fails I do an Install of WinXP {using the upgrade Option } over the top of WinXP and it has always fixed my problems. I have never lost any files, data or programs,or settings, nor has it ever caused me any problems afterwards. Sometimes it's almost like doing a tuneup. So he could give that a try. Its much easier then doing a complete clean install and chances are, what ever is corrupted will get fixed.

"Changing the extension makes no difference" -- does that mean that NOT just .exe files and .mp3 files are affected?? That seems to go agains the original statement, "He can download everything successfully except ".exe" and "MP3" files."

Can he download a 3 MB .zip or .txt file? How about a 5MB .pdf file or .mpeg file?

What I am saying is that I don't see how this can be file extension specific. Once the Download has started, IE does not really care what the extension is. There is no mechanism for IE to start a Download, and the 80% of the way through the Download decide that it changed its mind solely because of the file extension.

Re: Can't download .exe files (IE 6.0 SP-1)

I had him do a "SFC /SCANNOW" and reboot. Then I had him try to download an .exe file that "I" specified and not one that he said he couldn't download. There was no problem at all downloading the file. I gave him a couple more to try and all were able to be downloaded successfully. I then gave him several MP3 files to try and he was successful in downloading those also. So, I then asked what exactly was he trying to download before that failed? He said RealPlayer was the one particular file he couldn't download. <IMG SRC=http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/Headspin.gif> And then there was some site where he couldn't download MP3 files.

Bottom line...... at least he can now download .exe files and MP3 files in general. As for RealPlayer..... I told him to try and find some other site to download it from other than the one he's been trying. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    Thanks to all,
