From today's WinInfo UPDATE:

Microsoft also announced that beginning May 28 the company will lower the retail cost of Office products. Microsoft is slashing the price of the boxed versions of Office XP Standard Edition and Office XP Professional Edition by about 15 percent. Standalone copies of Microsoft Word 2002, Excel 2002, PowerPoint 2002, and Access 2002 will cost about 30 percent less.

    Good stuff...and about time!

See today's Woody's Office Watch for more info. As a Office 2003 beta tester, I'm looking for the best way to get the rtm package at a reasonable price, and if I can get xp cheaper, and then upgrade to 2003, that's all good.

There has considerable threatened defection with the originally announced terms of their volume licencing program and they are reacting, particularly in the current economy, and studies by Giga and Gartner showing real prospects that people would make good on the threats. They also plan increased free training and solution accelerators whatever they will turn out to be. Some say that they are reacting to the boost in sales that resulted from the huge slash in the scholastic version to $149. They are feeling some defection heat as well--
Munich, Germany switched 14,000 computers to Linux yesterday.

They have also decided apparently, but this could change by launch, how to bundle and sell One Note and Info Path with Office 2003--and both are getting a pretty good reception on newsgroups and at conferences by Beta users.

Yeah some very weird thinking going on about One Note. Of course it's main use is to be with tablet PCs , but many on the beta newsgroups are using it on their desktops, and with some reservations (we're waiting for a significant performance upgrade in the Beta 2 refresh), it has been very well received. I've been trying to get used to using it, but I'm kind of an old dog at learning new tricks. Still, if it is to be sold as a standalone product, the price can't be set very high (or high at all, or anything but dang cheap). Too bad, because bundled with Outlook it can be a very useful product indeed.
