PerfectDisk 6.0

I lucked out on this one and am getting mine free since I only bought Version 5 a couple of months ago. But, I think the upgrade price is $25 bucks and don't know if there's enough in this list to entice any of you to buy:

This new version provides more of the industry-leading enhancements you have come to expect from PerfectDisk.

Here is an overview of the enhancements in PerfectDisk Version 6.0:

1. Full integration with Active Directory group policy, making things easier than ever before for Active Directory users to manage their enterprise.
2. Rules-based recommendations for optimizing drive performance
3. Trend reporting capability
4. Enhanced statistical reporting on total fragmentation, free space fragmentation, and MFT and metadata fragmentation
5. Improved/enhanced graphical interface that shows Smart Placement and Fragmentation in the same view
6. Enhanced scheduling which enables users to add computers to existing schedules
7. Expanded and enhanced "Most Fragmented Files" list
8. Enhanced logging

Here's the link to Raxco. For what little it's worth, I think PerfectDisk does a better job of defragging than DisKeeper did.

Hi, Al ~

I switched from Diskeeper (full) to PerfectDisk six months or so ago and have found it to do a better and complete job of defragging as well. I will stick w/ 5.0 as it works flawlessly and there is nothing in the list that is really necessary.

Hi Al:
How does it compare on speed with DiskKeeper? I've only got the evaluation version, & recently read some reviews where people compained that they couldn't uninstall DiskKeeper LIte without trashing Defrag. Did you have the full version of DiskKeeper or the LIte version?
Thanks,

Hi, Phil ~

I have used the Lite, the Full and the Server editions of Diskeeper. Uninstalling it was not a problem in any case. Once you perform the first file optimization process w/ PerfectDisk, the speed at which the defragging occurs is noticeably faster, and unlike the former, it does a full and complete defrag of all data & system files including MFT, and with much less required free space overhead.

Thanks, Bruce. I wish you guys would quit finding improved utilities & browsers. Just when I thought I was satisfied...

Like Bruce, I never had any trouble uninstalling - I had the full version. Unfortunately, I never really did a "speed" test because on both products, after a trial run during the day, I set 'em to do all my partitions in the wee hours - except for the swap file partition on my third drive. By the way, I guess Bruce and Cowboy are right about whether to upgrade or not. After installing Version 6, I ran a quick sample and "looked around" at the reports and stuff. If there's anything "technically" improved, it must be under-the-covers. The drive reports are somewhat "prettier" and have a tad more information in 'em, but probably nothing that would make a current, satisfied user of Version 5 want to pay for the upgrade.

Phil. I think the problem most of those people are having that are talking about uninstalling Diskeeper is because they are going in and cleaning the registry themselfs, and when you do,quess what, pow, right in the kisser. You end up deleting Windows Defrag Plugin because Diskeeper takes it over when you load Diskeeper. Most people never even know it unless they go into the registry or check their list of Plugins. I know because I'm one of the Boneheads that did it. I had to go back in and repair my Win Defrag Plugin. Thats what I also like about PerfectDisk, It doesn't use WinXP Defrag Plugin. You can still use WinXP Defrag if you want after you load PerfectDisk. But if you install Diskeeper and try and use Win Defrag you end up with Diskeeper poping up, you can't use Win Defrag when you have Diskeeper loaded because it takes over that Plug In.

Re: PerfectDisk 6.0

Perfect Disk looks very good and I'm sure it is, but I run Diskeeper manually at the end of the day every day and it ranges anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes depending on the partition and what's been going on--and have learned one of the keys to defragging really well for a good performance hit and fooling yourself that you are defragging is to keep enough free space on the drive you're defragging--if you can stay in the 20-30% range, and do it everyday--it takes next to no time at all and faster will hardly be factor. Once in a while, I'll do the MFT and the paging file if they need doing and a good defragger like one of these is probably as good a software investment as you can make.

Re: PerfectDisk 6.0

Thanks to all that responded. SMBP makes a very good point--one that I should know well--"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Right now, using DiskKeeper Lite, defrag only takes about 5 minutes (once a week)...less time than it takes to go to the 'frig. My apps load quickly & my internet speed isn't too far from the maximum that Earthlink said I could expect (about 1.2 to 1.3 out of 1.5MB/second). When, Oh when, will I be satisfied.
