Can not mark Header info as TOC entry? (Word 2000 SR1)

Is it by design that I can not mark something in the Header as a Table of Contents entry? I'm in the Header, I hit Alt+Shift+O, and nothing happens. So I get out of the Header, back into the main document, and turn on the Mark Table of Contents Entry window, then get back into the header...but when I highlight text, nothing shows up in the Entry field. Help! On a deadline. <img src=/S/help.gif border=0 alt=help width=23 height=15>

I cannot imagine what Word would do if it let you mark something in the Header as being a TOC entry. It would have to show that it was on every page - or every even page of the relevant section or whatever.

What are you trying to achieve?

I think this is by design. Headers and footers are not bound to a single page, so why would you want to include something in the header in the Table of Contents?

Good point. I am creating a manual and the information is split up into different "sections" of information, with the Header changing for each section. I was trying to refer to the start of each section in the TOC. BUT...as you so graciously pointed out....word would freak out if I did that since Headers repeat (DUH!). Can you think of a better way? It would be redundant to have the section name listed AGAIN on the first page of the section - of course I could take it out of the header on the first page. But some sections are only 1 page long.

You could use one of the heading styles at the beginning of each section. You could also refer to it in your headers by using the {Styleref "Heading X"} field (where Heading X is the style you've used).

Or, perhaps even better, forget about headers for this purpose. Just start each section with a heading in the main document & include it in the TOC.

When you mention listing a section name twice on the first page of the section I get a bit confused.

Can you make a dummy document to show us what the first, and subsequent, pages of a section might look like and what you expect to see in the TOC?
