Win XP Bootup / Startup Disk (XP)

    Hi,

Is there any such thing as an XP Professional Workstation Boot/Startup Disk and if so, how do I make one?

    Thanks,

    m.q.

Check out http://www.bootdisk.com/ for many boot disks. Also have you googled around for this ? Lots of possibilities there.

Well, I don't think you're going to find what you're looking for at the site Viking mentioned. Without the Lounge search facility and my disgust with MYSELF for not being able to find this AGAIN at the Microsoft web sites, let me say again what I've tried to clear up several times in this board. In Windows XP there are THREE kinds of diskettes that a user could possibly need and yours truly can't find the instructions for what I think you're asking. What we used to know as a "boot diskette" is still possible in XP. That's the simplest one. Using Windows Explorer, format a floppy and make it bootable. You then have a diskette that will enable you to boot the machine to "DOS," albeit a WinME version of "DOS." You can also make, with XP, a Password Recovery diskette and the instructions for doing so can be found in Help, depending on whether it's a workgroup or domain.

The one that ticks me off that I can't find, is called an EMERGENCY STARTUP DISKETTE. It will allow a computer with WinXP to be "started" from a floppy. You simply have a formatted flopyy and COPY three files from your boot drive to the floppy: BOOT.INI, NTDETECT.COM and NTLDR (no extension).

Dammit, would someone help me find the MS KB article with the instructions and let's make a post we can save and refer to? This "question" is coming up too many times for comfort!

Al, I don't think there is a KB article on how to do this. However, here are the steps:
    1.
Double-click My Computer

Format a blank floppy disk

Copy boot.ini, NTLDR, NTDETECT.com, and for dual boot systems, bootsect.dos. If you have a SCSI controller with its BIOS disabled, also copy NTBOOTDD.SYS.

Reboot the computer and boot the from the floppy - it should take you into the OS by bypassing the boot loader on the hard drive.
This works in limited scenarios where the boot sector and nothing else is tanked. The six floppy setup disks for XP can be downloaded here:

Pro: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release...releaseid=33291
Home edition: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release...releaseid=33290[/list]

Well, sorta....if you set up your Lounge preferences so that your personal control panel is the first page when you log in, you can add your watched threads, post reminders, and favorite forums. I never sleep to begin with, but that's another story. At least that way, you can keep your favorite threads "bookmarked" with your profile.

Actually, I knew that. I do have it set up that way, but I just couldn't resist the comeback.

...you can add your watched threads, post reminders...

Embarrassing to admit, after as long a time as I've been coming to The Lounge, that I've never paid any attention to Post Reminders! I am now. Thanks for the nudge, Mark.
