xp to xp internet sharing

I have 2 computers at home running xp pro on internal network (2 nics)-- I connect to the internet by means of a usb modem.
I want to be able to connect the usb modem to either computer "A" or "B" and use "ICS" for connecting "A" or "B" to internet depending into which computer USB modem is plugged. Everything works fine however when I change usb location from say "A" to "B" I have to reinstalI ICS and visa versa -- what I require is a way to have the various network connections icons/setup remain available independent of current setup. How do I do it??
TIA

I think you're out of luck.

The computer that is running ICS acts as a DHCP server. It uses a fixed IP address for the NIC and provides an address to the other one. If you swap them over without a reboot then you're going to get conflicts unless you really know what you're doing.

Have you considered buying a router that you can connect your USB modem to?

I dont mind rebooting --- if fact the usb modem swopping is usualy done when both computers are switched off.

I still think you're out of luck. Someone has to tell the PCs whether to be a DHCP server or client. This is the reconfiguration that is effectively needed.

If you were in the UK using ADSL then I would recommend that you purchase something like the DrayTek Vigor 2200USB router. I don't know your local market well enough to advise.

If you really insist on trying to do this then you might be able to do something with Hardware Profiles.

I haven't used these since I had a Windows 98 laptop with a docking station, but they would certainly allow you to select two different configurations at boot time so could solve your problem.

To get started you can try Control Panel > System > Hardware > Hardware Profiles > Copy then give your two profiles sensible names and reboot. Now configure one of them to have the USB modem and the other to be the client.
