Rename many MP3s to reflect artist, title, etc.

    Hello:

Some time ago, in transferring all my files, I used DOS instead of Windows. Which meant that my 2,500 MP3s (all legal, BTW), i.e., files with long names, were converted to short names.

I would like to convert them back to their long names, in the following format:

Artist - Album Title - Track # - Song Title

Note: all this information is stored in the files, i.e., it's viewable under the columns, Aritst, Album Title, etc. in Windows Explorer.

When one of the four pieces of info is missing -- which is often the case - I would like the file name to omit that info. E.g.,

Artist - Album Title - Song Title

Is there a macro somebody can whip up for this task, to run on a folder of my choice? Or perhaps a program somebody knows of that has this capability?

Thanks so much! This is a project I've been procrastinating about for more than a year now!

    Best,

Wow, I feel your pain. Too bad there isn't a way to undo all of that. Perhaps Tag&Rename will do what you seek? I've never used it - but it sounds like the tool you're looking for.

If you can get the file name and data into a delimited format, e.g.,

    blondi~1.mp3|Blondie|Parallel Lines|10|Heart of Glass

(delimiter is the vertical bar character...anything that won't appear in the data)

then a VBScript can easily rename the files. So maybe it could be a two-step process.

Mark suggested Tag & Rename and I highly recommend it. This little utility will use exactly the items you choose from your ID3 tags and rename your files accordingly ... in seconds. I use it all the time.

It will pull the info from Ver1 or Ver2 tags, you choose.

    Hi Ricky,

    Tag&Rename is indeed great!

The only problem is that when one of the four tags I use is missing from an MP3 I want to rename, I want the new MP3 file name simply to omit that info.

Specifically, given my syntax, Artist - Album Title

F.Y.I.: I sent an e-mail to support@softpointer.com, asking if Tag&Rename has the capability to omit certain data.

Evgeny Efimov, who is I'm assuming the program's creator, replied:

"This is impossible now, I planned to add this function in future v3.1."
