    IE Script Error (WinXP/IE6 SP1)

I've found similar issues here in the lounge and on other sites, but without a satisfactory answer.

When logging onto EBay, I get a "Internet Explorer Script Error... Error: Object Expected." I get three of these, one right after the other, each time I access an "items matching your search" page. If I disable Active Scripting in Internet Options, the problem goes away, but then other functions (such as my Live365 Internet Radio player) won't work until I enable Active Scripting.

Script Debugging is disabled (checked) and Display Notification of Every Script Error is disabled (unchecked). This is really annoying and only started recently.

    Any help out there? <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>

    !) Have you repaired IE?

    2) Do you have an Browser Helper Objects on IE?

The last time I investigated one of these problems it was all do to some silly BHO that was interfering. After repairing IE, I would check if you have any BHO's running...

I have not repaired IE (how do you do that again? I have reinstalled it recently but I'm not sure that's the same thing.) and I don't know about BHO's. Of course, there's nothing in IE Help about BHO's.

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by paulemmons on 01-Jun-03 00:11. )</P>I've followed the instructions for repairing/reinstalling IE6: changing the reg key for IE6: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftActive SetupInstalled Components{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383} from 1 to 0, then running IE6 setup. The install failed: "Windows Update - IE & Internet Tools... Setup can not continue because fires are missing..." Tried three times, let it log on, download files and resume setup... and it fails again. Of course, IE6 actually still does work (didn't have to go back to a restore point), albeit with the very same problems.

Re: IE Script Error (WinXP/IE6 SP1)

There are a couple of strange ways to repair IE in WinXP -- since by default, they don't put it in Add/Remove Programs. I am not sure if this will work (it implies it is for IE5), but:
    -----------------
How to Repair or Return to Previous Internet Explorer Installation

If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if Internet Explorer 5 is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, you may be able to start the Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt. To do so, click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK:

    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:Program FilesInternet ExplorerSetupSETUP.EXE" /g "C:WINDOWSIE Uninstall Log.Txt"
    -----------------------

Then, I am sure you located and used this:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP.

I am not sure the "repair" process will work, but it is always worth trying first. You could also try to reinstall Windows Script. But I would look for BHO's next -- just in case some one is interfering.

Here is one tool you can use: BHODemon. Their home page is here. For more information on BHO's, read this.

I may be totally off base, but one never knows... It only takes a few minutes to check this out.

Thanks very much R2 and SMBP... I'll try your suggestions when I get some time (later today and/or tomorrow) and I'll post back the results here.

Re: IE Script Error (WinXP/IE6 SP1)

    Paul--

Just a couple things to add to R2's suggestions. One of the first steps I would always go to in trying to repair IE6, particularly since you are running Win XP, which has a pretty good SFC tool is to run system file checker--always a good first step to repair IE--because it is easy and no down side to running it. If you aren 't familiar there are lots of explanations on the IE/XP threads in the lounge as well as recipes for attempting to fix IE. The way I do it is to go to the run box or dos prompt--either--and put in two commands in order 1) "sfc /purge cache" and 2) sfc /scannow"--space after sfc and no quotes in command. Put in your XP CD--it'll want it most probably and be prepared to keep hitting "retry" several times to get it done--takes 15-25 minutes but worth it. To context SFC for you:

    Running SFC Screen Shots
    222193: Windows File Protection
310747: Description of the Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker
    222417: Commands for SFC

Another KB that might help you:
813444: How To Troubleshoot When IE Cannot Connect to Sites

As to BHO's and and spyware, they are <font color=blue>major</font color=blue>--going to say it again, major causes of IE problems and crashes. Here is a brief explanation--they help customize browsers but can reek major havoc: BHO's and MSDN Article on BHO Browser Customization

Several times a week people will hop on the lounge urging to fix a stall, freeze, problem connecting to sites, some of the IE window opening problems by running Ad Aware 6.0--many use the premium here but free one works well and one of Internet Explorer's best friends Spybot: Search and Destroy Patrick Kollla's excellent continually updated app.--one of most useful programs you can put on your computer and run regularly--every few days or when an IE or CPU use or freeze problem comes up. I would download and run these in addition to BHO demon--all 3 are very helpful IE adjuncts with newsletters that are worth reading. A few weeks ago, Mark (WyllyWylly) had a nice tip on unticking the box you referenced on third party extensions in an IE thread where BHO's were discussed--doing that can solve a number of problems--but since you need to keep it checked to run things like Live365--all the more reason to run these programs. I put a link to a screenshot tutorial for configuring Spybot--was reminded to run it yesterday by cowboydawg, and tweaked it with major performance improvement and it stopped a BHO called showbar.exe from crashing my IE continually.

Finally--you might get some help from two other places:
    1) Sandi's IE Site full of tips and recipes for repairing and tweaking IE/OE
    2) Kelly's XP Korner--Has 15 parts and the A to Z part under "I">Internet Explorer has a number of repairs.

    Good luck--please post what happens.

    SMBP
