    read only file (msoffice 2000)

    Good Morning all,
I currently have ms office 2000 and I receive an excel sheet on a monthly basis from my boss that has xp as an os, All has been going well in the past. I recieve the file and make my changes and send it back. However, this month I received the file and could not open it because it says that it is a read only file. I know that with win 98 which by they way am running as an os you can correct this issue very easy by "Save as" and making sure that the "read only" box is de-selected and then save it under a different name. Could anyone please tell me the procedure to do this in xp so I can tell my boss?
thanks in advance for all the help
    Bill

In the Excel File | Save As dialog, click Tools | General Options, UNcheck Read-only Recommended. (Though there may be other reasons for the issue.)

    John,
Thanks for the quick response, however, my boss is using xp os and says there is no option for this check box. Is she just missing something or is this the answer if using office 2000 under win 98.

I use Excel 2002 under Windows XP, and the option is there, so I suggest that your boss has another look.

My answer is for standard Excel XP SP-1 under Windows XP, US English. To be more specific, within the File | Save As dialog, Tools is the righmost icon, which is a dropdown, General Options is the second last choice at the bottom of the dropdown.
