    WinXP crashing on loading (WinXP)

I have been asked to put this up by a friend who currently can't do so for himself - for reasons that should be pretty clear from both the title and rest of the post!

The other day (Friday, I think) he switched on his machine as usual, but just as it got to the bit where he would log in, it flashed red then died completely. Since then, everytime he switches on it either does the same thing or just goes black.

Has anyone seen this before, and if so, any ideas as to what it might be?

    Many thanks in advance

No, I've not seen it. But if it gets all the way to the logon point, I would first try booting into Safe Mode to see if that works. Sounds like something "video" oriented but it's impossible to tell at this point. Another test of the components of the system would be to boot the machine with a boot floppy of some kind and do some "fiddling" around, i.e. see if the hard drive can be seen, do a few "dir" commands, and so on.....

Hi Al, thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I think he did mention that it would boot in Safe mode, but I can't be certain - I think he said that Safe mode said there were no problems, but as soon as he booted normally it crashed again.

I have no idea about WinXP - I've seen it in operation a few times but that's the extent of my contact with it! - so I'm completely flummoxed.

Have him try to boot to Safe Mode and open display properties. Change the video resolution to 640 and reboot to see if that helps. It's possible that the video drivers have gotten corrupt and it would be a good idea to check (if he can) the web site of the video card maker and download some new drivers for installation. Failing that, if he has the previous drivers on hand, he could (in Safe Mode) open Device Manager and delete the video card. At re-boot see if Windows re-initializes video successfully. It may ask for his previous drivers, so one shouldn't do this unless the driver disk or CD is available. Of course, the whole process could turn out to be something else, but it's gonna be detective work one way or the other. Luck to you both.....

Thanks for that Al - I'll pass it on to him this evening and see if it helps!
