Converting footnotes to columns help (Word 97?)

Might you know how to convert footnotes into columned footnotes in a Word document?

Ideally, I'd like to split my footnotes in two columns directly below the main body of my text. Typically, columned footnotes take the form of endnotes in journal articles. Still, I've yet to discover how to format thus and so.

I'm pretty savvy with the footnote/endnote function(s), but it seems that Word just isn't programmed to split footnotes into columns, only endnotes - alas.

I've aggressively searched the net over the last two and a half days and have yet to find the answer . . .

I just don't see any way to do this in Word that wouldn't be a huge headache (e.g., involving simulating footnotes with Frames). Is a journal requiring it?

Thanks for your response! Nah, I'm just putting the finishing touches on my dissertation and thought the split-columned footmotes would look nice. Perchance someone else can solve the riddle . . .
