    Messenger Service Alert

I just received a Messenger Service popup on my Win2K computer without Messenger installed.

It was a pop-up advertisement that was broadcasted directly to IPs.

This was the web site of the company that created this technology : www.4vsoft.com

I find this very disturbing as it goes right through my firewall, antivirus and MailWasher as it's not an email.

Can you find out what this is all about and let me and the community at large know. It looks like there is a big whole in Windows to allow something like this.

    Hi, Les ~

Go to:<UL><LI>'Control Panel' > 'Performance and Maintenance' > 'Administrative Tools' > 'Services'<LI>Double-click 'Messenger'<LI>Click 'Stop' under 'Service status:'<LI>Select 'Disabled' in the drop-down box of 'Startup type:'<LI>'Apply' > 'OK'[/list]For a decent explanation, please see this post.

    Bruce,

Good job there but I have some questions. My XP Pro doesn't show 'Perfmance and Mainenance' so I went directly to Administrative Tools.

Then, after the "stop" under Service Status . . .:

    * Select 'Disabled' in the drop-down box of 'Startup type:'
    * 'Apply' > 'OK'

. . . I just couldn't understand what you meant. Where are these last two steps, please.

This appears to be a valuable STOP.

    Aloha,

    Hawai`i Bill

    <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/pineapple.gif> Hi, Bill ~

If you are using the 'Classic' view rather than the Playskool 'Category' view, then it would be 'Settings' > 'Control Panel' > 'Administrative Tools'. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

    Re: Messenger Service Alert

    Thanks for the responses.

I think you've missed my point tho.

The dialog box (which I did not do a printscreen ;-( of) had a spam advertisement message in it. The title of the message was "Messenger Service" but it is not from Microsoft Messenger, MSN or the like.

This message popped up on my machine and upon following up on the ad it showed that the software that was used to have this come into my machine was from www.4vsoft.com

I went to this site and it explained how they can circumvent spam filters by sending messages directly via IP addresses and not thru email. Have a look at the site which will explain it better than I can.

I'd love to hear your response once you've seen it.

Bruce is having you turn off the Windows messenger service, not an IM (instant messaging) product. It look as though the spamming product is exploiting the Windows messenger service.

    Hi, Les ~

I now it may seem confusing to you now, but your point was not lost as this is nothing new and unfortunately we have become all too familiar with this. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> There has been a lot of confusion surrounding the similar program names and thus why I highly recommend you carefully peruse the Lounge link I provided above.

'Messenger Service' has absolutely nothing to do with 'Windows Messenger' or 'MSN'. What you are seeing is a method by spammers exploiting this service which simply transmits 'net send' & 'Alerter' service messages between clients and servers, designed to be used by administrators to send messages to users on a network. It is highly recommended you disable this service.

    Yo, Dayton!

Oh, I get it. Had to go back in there three times -- and then the cock crew! Anyway, thank you.

    Hi, Jefferson ~

Oh, just an odd reference to a joke about a situation on Calvary many years ago.
