Quick Question (XP Pro)

Hi All [wave]

Got a couple quick questions.

I've had my computer with XP Pro for a few months, and I decided last weekend, that it was time to explore and discover some things people have told me that is so unique about XP.

So now that I've dug my way outta that deep, really DARK hole in the middle of cyber space, there are a couple things I need to know before I go any further.

I've used Windows Media Player quite a bit for my audio, but I haven't ventured into Video yet. What program do I use to watch videos? I downloaded "QuickTime Player", but it seemed to be only for "Apple".
I downloaded "Windows XP PowerToys" and "Microsoft WindowsMediaPlayer 9 Series" with Wallpaper changer & Video ScreenSaver. Sounds pretty neat huh? I don't know much more about them other than what they're called, but by gosh they sound good!

I also need to know if there is any other chat programs that have the same "voice chat" capabilities as the "Windows "Messenger" .......... aaanddd ....... if one were to "lose" the "WindowsMessenger", is there someplace one could go to download it again to get it back?

Okie dokie, that's all the questions I have for this morning.

Thanks in advance for your time & help. Have a great day.

Re: Quick Question (XP Pro)

Windows Media Player (8, the version that came with Windows XP, or 9, the version that you now have) can play many types of video.
Keep Apple's QuickTime player for .mov files.
RealOne from http://www.real.com is needed to play some other types, and it is better at streaming video than MediaPlayer. Some people are off by the extra's that come with it.
If you have a DVD player in your PC, a dedicated DVD application is probably better than MediaPlayer.

Others will have to reply to your question about Windows Messenger.

Re: Quick Question (XP Pro)

WMP can play DVD's, but only if you first install DVD software like PowerDVD or WinDVD, as it will rely on their codecs. Then it just comes down to whose interface you prefer. Personally, I favour RealOne (not the free version, though, which loses some functionality) and Real is much better for internet radio.

There is a version of QuickTime for Windows, from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/. Make sure the right version is selected, but this should be automatic.

Oh, yeah...Windows Messenger can be found on your XP installation disc. Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Add/Remove Windows Components and check the box for Messenger.

Baby G--

You mentioned an alternative IM client--Trillian by Cerulean Studios is one--it'll connect ot ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, and IRC in a single interface--and Trillian .74 is free; Trillian Pro is not. Many people who IM frequently use it.

For getting started with XP video and DVD here are a few links. Microsoft has a lot of How To tutorials for music and video since making them user friendly is a big XP selling point. Here are some and if you go to the MS Win XP site and it's expert zone, and click on "How To" or "Focus On" you can find more.
