mail merge (Word 2000)

The mail merge option is no longer on my tools menu, it is NOT grayed out, it is no longer there. I don't know when it happened or why, it used to be there. I have un-installed and re-installed Word several times to no avail. It always comes back without mail merge. I also tried detect and repair from the help menu....no help. Can someone help me? Is there a way to do a "clean" un-install of Word? I really need to get it back as an option. Thank you.

Menu and toolbar customizations usually are saved in your Normal.dot template, which often "survives" a reinstall of Word. Try closing Word and renaming your Normal.dot template to something like abNormal.dot. When you restart Word, you should get default menus and toolbars.

Alternatively, you also can try to recustomize what you have now using Tools>Customize... looking under Commands>Tools and dragging the merge items back onto the menu.

Another alternative. Go to Tools/Customize.../Toolbars tab & select Menu bar. It will have a check in it. Then click the Reset... button & answer yes when it asks if you want to reset it to the default. This should bring it back. If you have menu customizations that you don't want to lose, you'll have to recreate them. That's true whether you use this method or the one that Jefferson suggests. I'm guessing that you pressed Ctrl+Alt+minus & then clicked the command. That keyboard shortcut is used for removing menu commands.

Hi all,

If it is just the Mail Merge option that has gone walkies then you can usually get it back (without affecting other settings or customisations) more or less as jscher suggests but I think you need to go to Tools | Customize, then in the Customize dialog select the Commands tab, in the Categories list select All Commands, then in the Commands list find MailMergeHelper and drag it onto the Tools menu.
