Need installation help (VS.NET 2003 Pro)

Hi all
I am trying to install Visual Studio.NET 2003 Pro from some Microsoft Select CDs and am running into problems. There seem to be several files missing from my CD!! I checked Microsoft's website, but couldn't find much on VS.NET 2003, and nothing like the problem I'm having. This forum doesn't seem to be the place to address an installation problem, but I was wondering if any of you programmer/developers out there could recommend something.

Your help would be much appreciated, it was an ordeal just to GET these stupid disks!

Re: Need installation help (VS.NET 2003 Pro)

I feel your pain I've installed VS.Net 2003 Pro (I replaced VS.Net 2003 Enterprise Final Beta with the newly released Pro version) and although it did work for me, the installation process was ridiculous as it upgraded tons of things and took forever to complete. I was very worried that my PC would never work again (as has happened in the past when MS "fixes" things for me).

What kind of system are you starting with? What OS, etc.? The install package checks if you have their required prerequisites and if not it installs all sorts of service packs for tons of things whether you want them or not. I have Win2k on an older PC (350MHz but enough memory and lots of hard disk space).

Did you make the CDs from the download or did you get them from the MSDN subscription (which is where I got mine)?

Re: Need installation help (VS.NET 2003 Pro)

Let's see--it's a 1GHz PC w/ 512MB RAM, lots of disk space (I forget how much), and WinXP SP1. It's also a completely fresh load--I'm not trying to upgrade any betas or versions of VS .NET 2002. I got the disks from the MSDN subscription (but for some reason everyone at my site calls them the "Microsoft Select CDs"), and the prereqs installed just fine, though I did have to go back and first install the WinXP version of IIS. My problems came when I tried installing the actual VS .NET 2003.

I've installed the VS .NET Pro 2002 several times for people (due to the fact I'm the only person in the building with access to the MSDN disks <grin>) & knew the install to be lengthy, so I figured 2003 would be lengthy as well, but it kept telling me "file not found", and sure enough, that file didn't exist on the CD! Only there were over 100 files not on the disk.

However, I'm starting to think I *may* have figured this out. It's just going to take me a while to PROVE it owing to the fact that this silly installation takes so darn long and I'm going to have to copy everything to the network. I'll post again later today once I test my theory.

Thanks so much!

OK, I've figured it out!

We normally do this type of installation over the network, and the guy who put the source files on the server for me created 2 folders for the core VS components--one for CD1 and the other for CD2. The installer, however, isn't smart enough to know when it's reached the end of disk 1 and never gives the option to browse to or enter disk 2. Apparently you have to munge everything together into a single folder in order not to get the problem I had.

Of course, now that I put VS .NET 2002 on my customer's computer (which IS allowed by the licensing), I have to go figure out how to do an *upgrade*. Lucky me!

Thanks again!

Glad you're moving forward again. I haven't done network installs only used the CDs myself so didn't think about that.

When I had VS.Net 2003 Enterprise Final Beta 2 installed and wanted to go to the official release, I uninstalled the Beta first and then installed my new version. I think that's safer than upgrading from a previous version. At first I was concerned the new install wouldn't be able to find my projects (I keep them in a different tree structure than the install puts them) but that wasn't a problem.

Have Fun!
