Changing Amount in Text to a Value (Access 2000)

What is the best way of changing an amount in text in a field to a value. Example I've got 3,789,478.18- and I would like to change it to -3,789,478.18. I've tried to change the property of the field but then it change to 3,789,478 without the value after the fullstop.

    Thanks

To which type and subtype of field did you try to change it? You should use the Currency data type, or if you prefer Numeric, the Single Precision or Double precision subtype. If you use the default Numeric type, Long Integer, the decimal part will be lost.

Thanks Hans. The Double precision did the trick

Be careful of double and single datatypes because they are floating point values and you will get odd "number creep" in the decimal portion.
