Doc already opened on another computer (Excell 2002)

We have added a new computer to our network. We have a spreadsheet called Shipping Report that is used by several computers on the network. All the computers can access it and write to it when the spreadsheet is not opened on the computer it resides on or any other computer on the network. However, on the new computer, that we added to the network, the shortcut to bring it up on the computer will bring the worksheet up, but give the following message EVEN THOUGH NO OTHER COMPUTER HAS THE WORKSHEET OPENED: A document with the name Shipping Report is already opened. You can not open 2 docs with the same name even if they are in different folders. To open the 2nd doc either close the doc currently open or rename one of the docs. Also the worksheet can not be written to by this computer. Any suggestions at this point is greatly appreciated...thank you, JohnL

    Try the following:
Make sure Excel is not active.
    Select Start | Run...
    Enter "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10Excel.exe" /regserver
    Click OK
    This will "re-register" Excel.

Note: If you have installed Office XP in a non-standard location, you will have to modify the path to Excel.exe above.

Hans...a couple of things as I tried your suggestion. First the new machine has Office 97 on it...I was in error as to the Excel version. I modified the suggested entry to accomodate it and when I ran it....it came back with the following message: One of your object libraries ( stdole32.tlb) is missing or damaged. Please run set up to install it. I would like your comments/guidance on this before I try a re install if possible...thank you, JohnL

I would go ahead and run the Office 97 install again over the current installation. That should install the correct version of StdOLE32.tlb.

Note: do you happen to have a mix of different Office versions on this PC? If so, you must uninstall higher versions first, then reinstall Office 97, followed by a reinstall of Office 2000 or XP in different folders.

    Hans: Does this also apply to Excel 97 and/or Excel 2000? Thanks... <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

    Hi John,

I am online in the Lounge every day, but there are many other Loungers who can help you too. P.S. I meant a mix of different Office versions. Windows XP is the operating system. You should not uninstall and reinstall Windows XP for this problem! That is much too drastic for now.

    Hello John,

This applies to Excel 97 and 2000 too, but there the default path to Excel.exe is "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe", the Office10 bit is specific to Office XP.

Re: Doc already opened on another computer (Excell 2002)

Are the preferences on the XP box set such that a single click opens files? If so, and the user is double clicking, they may be actually opening the file twice( which would match the message received).

I had trouble with a mouse driver that gave the "single click = Double click" problem. It sounds crazy, but reversing the left and right mouse key actions resolved that for me - I've now moved to a new cordless mouse so its not a problem any more.
