    Images as AutoText (Word XP)

I have saved a scanned signature into AutoText. Should I be able to use the AutoComplete to insert the image, or should I have to go through Insert, AutoText and Insert it?

    Thanks.

AutoComplete should work, or you can type part of of the name of the AutoText entry and press F3.

It doesn't look as though the AutoComplete works, and had forgotten the F3 key - thanks for reminding me.

It is switched on, and tried with 4 characters and 12 characters. I think the issue is that it is a scanned image rather than pure text, so I guess it is remembering the F3 key.

I haven't used Word 2002, but in order for AutoComplete to work in Word 2000, it must be at least 4 characters long & you must turn on AutoComplete (Tools/AutoCorrect/AutoText tab/Show AutoComplete tip for AutoText & dates).

I haven't tested this extensively, but my impression is that AutoComplete only works if the entry contains some text. If you make a linked picture into an AutoText entry, AutoComplete works because you actually stored the INCLUDEPICTURE field code. If you make a non-linked picture together with some text into an AutoText entry, it works too. But if you make a non-linked picture into an AutoText entry by itself, AutoComplete won't work (but F3 will).
    Why? <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    (Edited to include attachment)
    Hi Jackie

I would create an AutoCorrect entry. Especially if I wanted to have the signature appear automagically after typing a very short piece of text. Below are the steps that I took in its creation.

    1. Inserted the original image (arrives as floating, but convert to in-line by right-clicking image, choose Format picture..., Layout tab, select In line with text, then click OK.)

    2. From Tools, select AutoCorrect Options..., choose the AutoCorrect tab. (Your image should be showing with the mutually exclusive option 'Formatted' selected. (See attachment)

    3. Type in the short text that you want to use (make sure it is not a dictionary entry or one that has been added to a custom.dic)

    4. Click Add then OK.

Back in the document, type your short code and press either the Tab, Enter or Space bar keys to see your image appear.

Here's a suggestion. Rather than just create a signature image, create a signature block, with name, contact details and, of course, the signature image. Then you are using the AutoCorrect feature to its maximum advantage. (This AutoCorrect entry is stored with Normal.dot, it is only stored in a separate file called username.acl if it is not stored as formatted. All AutoText entries are stored with Normal.dot but will require the use of the F3 function key unless AutoComplete kicks in, like Yours truly, etc..)

    Hope this helps, Leigh

    Hi Jackie:
Well, it's supposed to work for inline objects, as well as text. However, I can't get it to work right now either. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Re: Images as AutoText (Word XP)

Thanks Leigh, will try when I get home tonight.

It needs to be a scanned image, because the signature isn't mine, otherwise, yes, I would do a signature block in AutoText. I'm just trying to be more efficient with getting my membership cards signed rather than waiting a minimum of 2 weeks to get them signed by the individual and returned to me. Getting rather fed-up of chasing.

    Thanks again.

    Jackie
