Dial Up

My computer (P3) running Me has recently taken to connecting to the ISP on start-up. Doesn't appear to do anything, just connects. I assume that some new software must be trying to update, but I can't find it, and it doesn't seem to do anything. I am not keen on this so would like to stop it, but I can't find any control that seems to prevent this. I'm sure this must be simple so hope someone can provide a quick fix. Thanks.

Re: Dial Up

Hi Stuart

Go to Start>Settings>Dialup Networking
Right Click on your Internet Connection Icon and select Properties
Click on the Dialing tab (at far right) and make sure that the button for Never Dial a Connection is selected

This should work, as long as you haven't acquired an application that is capable of changing it back. Regardless, it might be a good idea to run Spybot S&D and Adaware.

Have a Great day!!!

Hi again

You can download Adaware and Spybot S&D. They are both

Re: Dial Up

Thanks Ken. I have Spybot and Adaware and these have "cleaned me up". I have a feeling that this doesn't occur immediately after I have cleaned out. I'll check your suggestion and let you know how it goes.

Regards

Hi Stuart

If you continue to have problems, you might be able to track down the application using Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel and/or SysInternals' Process Explorer. Again, both are downloads.

Re: Dial Up

I have a similar problem in Win98 SE. Using a combination of Process Explorer and MSConfig, I determined that the culprit is ccapp.exe, an essential part of both Norton Antivirus 2003 and Norton Internet Shield 2003. Didn't find anything on Symantec's support page that explained why ccapp calls dial-up networking, or what to do about it. Other Norton apps, such as System Doctor, do this as well. One suggestion was to go into Internet Explorer's Advanced Internet Options, and disable Check for Publisher's Certificate Revocation and Check for Server Certificate Revocation, under the Security category. I haven't determined whether this works for the ccapp problem.

Assuming that NAV 2003 is causing your problem as well, it's _probably_ nothing to worry about, though ccapp will only stop calling DUN at startup if you let it connect when it wants to. If you don't have one of the Symantec programs that uses ccapp. then you should be able to use Process Explorer to determine which program causes the problem on your computer, or msconfig.exe (Selective Startup) to determine the program by a process of elimination.
