Hi,
NT has a "Repair" option where some o/s corruption can be fixed without a system reinstall.
My Q. is does Win98 have that option.
If so, how do I use it?
Are there any good web-based tuturials on using it?
Thanks,
m.q.

Win98 has a rudimentary implementation of the System File Checker which you can run by clicking Start - Run and entering MSCONFIG. There is no repair option, per se - unless you re-run the setup program, which more or less does the same thing. Running Windows 98 setup again will check and replace any files in the OS that are corrupt, missing, or of an incorrect version.

Hi there Mark, re: running windows 98 setup, do you mean via the 98 disc coz I cant see anything under msconfig?
Just insert your Win98 CD and choose the "UPGRADE" option and it will load right over the existing and replace missing files and such.

Actually in Win98 you get to the System File Checker by going to Start -Run - and typing in SFC and OK.

And this is only to restore corrupted files, it does not reformat in any way, right? Forgive my question, but just wanted to double check. Does System Works do the same thing Mark? Thanks everyone
You are correct, Ms. Cyberdance. If the installation files are on the hard drive already you won't need the CD at all; you can choose a location to copy them from. There is no reformatting involved in either the system file check or a reinstall.
SystemWorks does NOT do the same thing, however - it does not replace any files, but instead repairs broken file links, corrects registry problems, and some other things as well. It's an excellent maintenance tool.

Hello Cowboy, how ya doing?
Listen, when I did as you suggest and copied Win98 SE over itself, I lost all the Security updates and Hotfixes that I had installed. Perhaps I did something wrong, but that's what happened to me.

Any time one installs a OS on it's self, it will wipe clean a LOT of the updates installed, you did as you were instructed to do.
Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
Well! What do you know. I did something right for a change.
Thank you Dave.

Thanks Cowboy and Mark, got it now! Just needed to clarify, really cool to know of these options, such a wealth of information in this place, its hard to leave and go to work! :-)
Hi,
Thanks people - another Q: if we reboot with the CD and choose "Repair" then will all my Win98 config stay?
i.e. applications software installations, registry entries for them etc.
It seems from a post in this thread that hotfixes are lost in this process - but what about applications software such as Microsoft Word.
Will my Win98 have the same apps s/w ??
m.q.
Ah! Wylly - I caught 'ya.
MSCONFIG is not the place to find System File Checker. SFC is the name of de place.
