    8X Graphics

    Hi There
helping a friend with an AMD 2000+ CPU Soltek 75FRN-L Mainboard ATi 9700Pro System ... board is 8X compliant as is graphics card both are enabled in Bios
but when we ran 3D mark 2003 the system test reads 8X capable 4X enabled, it is also only completing 2 of the 3 sound tests for that mark. Soltek tech support says that card and board have been tested and work extremely well together on that test but....

Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Regards
    Doni

You also need driver support within Windows to fully enable AGP 8X. Try updating the ATI drivers and see if that makes a difference. Also consider downloading the latest VIA drivers for the mainboard.

For what it's worth, there's very little out there that can make use of the AGP 8X specification, and other than benchmarks you probably won't see a performance difference.

    Re: 8X Graphics

    Hi Mark
thanks for the reply.. :-) my friend is into gaming in a big way so of course likes to have the latest stuff, I have installed latest Via, Catalyst, and Creative drivers for XP
the system is fast and smooth but for some reason the 3D mark is still reading 4X graphics and only 2 of the 3 sound tests can be run?????
The third being that 60 sounds are not supported, have you had any experience with this happening before?

    Cheers

    Re: 8X Graphics

First, what operating system? 98, XP? I'm curious as to how the OS reports the video card's abilities. Open up the display properties and click on the Settings tab. Does Windows recognize the card as being AGP 8X? If it does, that would indicate that it is the 3D Mark test has some limitation. Which version of the test are you using?

As far as sounds, I'm not entirely clear as to what you mean by '60 sounds are not supported' - since that has nothing to do with the video aspect of the tests, it's separate issue - but again, it could be related to the tests that are being run. It would probably be more beneficial to start a new thread on that topic so things don't get confused.

Personally, I'm not much of a benchmark person, if the game(s) run to satisfaction, that's my criteria for success. It's nice to know how your (or in this case your friend's) rig stacks up, but a few points on benchmark tests don't usually translate into a noticeable difference in normal use.

    Hi Mark

OS is XP Pro, bench is 3D mark 2003 windows seeing card as 8X
I agree with you regards the bench, am going thru these motions to elimate error with the board as he still has warranty coverage at this point. Will go over his settings once again and double check all.

    Re: 8X Graphics

    Hi Donimac,

This may be a longshot, but I know that the free version of 3D Mark 2003 does not allow some of the tests that the Registered (Full) version allows. Is it possible that this is a factor here?

    Just a thought... <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Hey Guys :-)

Just thought I would post back ... problem is solved!!! It was basically me being an idiot! When my friend uninstalled his last graphics card(GForce) he also uninstalled all his nForce2 nVidia drivers, once I located these and re-installed his system is running in 8X and with fast write enabled.

Thanks a million for all your help
    very much appreciated

    Doni :-)
