Unable to Open linked objects in a task (2000 sp-3)

After inserting an "object" (file) in an Outlook task, I can now only open the object for editing by right clicking the embedded icon and selecting the "open source" facility in the properties box of that linked object. This has only come about since I transferred all my documents to a new PC using WinXP on our network (previous PC on Win98 & network). Have tried this process on another PC (at home not on network) with a similar setup and everything works fine???? Any advice/direction would be much appreciated.

Sounds like there's no association of a program with that file extension. What happens if you double click on the file in Windows Explorer?

The files open in Explorer and also if you link them in other Office applications (embed a link to a spreadsheet in a Word document and it is OK). It only appears to affect WinXP machines (we have 2 here) as the link works with Win98. The other WinXP machine has OutlookXP installed so it's not that either.
