Synchronization of IPAQ to Exchange 5.5 server

    Hello,

I am sure that this has been done before, but what I am looking to do is have executives use their IPAQ 5450 devices to access their Exchange 5.5 mailboxes seamlessly. All users have the Outlook client installed on their desktops, but do not want to be carrying these devices when traveling. Also, we are not looking for a dialup solution, since this would be an extra process for these users.

Therefore, we want the user to use their IPAQ while traveling, and have their mailbox contents update in real time.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks, john

The IPaq must have some method of connecting to a copy of the Inbox.

If you are not going to use dial-up and you are not going to synchronise using a cable to the laptop then what connectivity are you planning?

What you're asking for is a push. Activesync won't do that. There are several vendors who can. We use Extended Systems, which is platform agnostic.

The "push" is what we are looking for. I had been given Infowave and Visto as alternative solutions. How was XTND to use for ease of use and management. Many of my end users will be novices.

I looked into those too, but didn't try them. The XTND architecture and game plan fit our international organization better. At time of our purchase anyway, it supported the most platforms and communications options. Also, it didn't require that anything be installed on the exchange servers.

Our users had two main issues with the transition from Palm Desktop and Activesync to XTND. One was getting used to changing passwords on their devices. In two places. They have to change network passwords every 45 days. After a year and a half some of them still don't get it. The other issue was a different method of getting documents to/from their devices. These are more training/support problems than technical. We've had no problems from a technology perspective.

Our users were pushing for Blackberry devices. IT didn't want to go there because of the proprietary technology and comparatively limited functions. XTND pushes all the PIM data and email to all our Palm, WinCE and and Symbian users who want it. Other users can just connect and pull when they feel like it. I don't know if other vendors have caught up or how they compare these days. Might be interesting to ping Gartner.
