Link to Word doc from template

A user in the office came to me with the problem of trying to link to a Word 2000 Document Template file (.dot) in a frontpage created html file.

Simply pointing to the .dot file on the network does work, but not exactly the way we want to, and not consistently. The problem is that under certain circumstances, the DOT file itself will open, and not allow the user to Save As to a Doc file. (only DOT).

I was wondering if there was an accepted best way to link to an Office document and have it launch Word (rather than loading the word doc into IE) and create a new document from a template, and allow saving as Doc.

After some searching and experimenting, I haven't come up with a realiable way to do this.

    Thanks for any ideas

    Thank you Jefferson,

I thought that this might require some scripting. Unfortunately, I never do this sort of thing, and don't immediately understand the code, or how to apply it to my user's application. But I'm sure that some time with the windows scripting docs will get me going.

    Jim,

    Here's something worth a try:

Using Windows Explorer, create a shortcut to the Word .dot file; you can put this shortcut into the same folder where the .dot is located.
The name of the shortcut file will then be something like: "ShortcutToTemplate.dot.lnk".
Point your hyperlink to this shortcut file, rather than the .dot file, as in:

    <pre>Click to create new document.</pre>

A new document based on the template should then open in Word.
