Playing '.mov' files in Quicktime 6.x (Windows XP Pro)

I'm posting this question to the WinXP forum because this problem has not occurred when I was using earlier versions of Windows...

I'm wondering if anyone has had any problems playing a ".MOV" file in quicktime once its downloaded from the internet. I constantly get a message that Quicktime can't play the file because the file cannot be found by quicktime, even though I've definitely saved it to my computer.

If anyone has any suggestions/comments re: fixes, I'd appreciate hearing them. Thanks!

Re: Playing '.mov' files in Quicktime 6.x (Windows XP Pro)

Have you tried to right click on the .mov file and choose "open with" and choose Quicktime?

    I also found this:
    I can't view the movies.

Download the latest version of QuickTime from
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ - It's free! These movies may
not work in the latest version of Windows Media Player. If you have the
latest version of QuickTime and your browser still tries (unsuccessfully)
to play the movies in Media Player, you can open QuickTime and open the
.mov files from within QuickTime or force your computer to play .mov files
in QuickTime. To do this, read on...

On a PC using Internet Explorer: Open the My Computer icon on the desktop.
Then choose View, then Folder Options, then File Types. Scroll down until
you find (probably several) entries for QuickTime movies. One of these,
when you select it, will probably have "mov" as the extension (listed
below). If you then select Edit, you'll get a window with the specifics.
To change the software used, click on the new Edit button and click on
Browse to search your computer for the QuickTime software. Select it and
click OK. The "Actions" in the Edit File Type box should be "open". If
it's not, click New and type open in the box.

    cowboydawg,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've tried that with the same awful result: it comes up with a quicktime error message that just says that it can't play the file because it doesn't exist. I wouldn't worry about this if it was only one file, but there are several .mov files that I've downloaded and the same thing happens. However, when I go to the quicktime site, I can download movies from there and they play fine on my computer.

    Help! This is really frustrating!

Well one thing I read says to uninstall and Download { reinstall Quicktime } the latest version of course{ It's free} Quicktime 6 and it then will find all your .mov files.

Actually, I've already done what you are suggesting, and still no luck!

I might just try to download an ealier version of quicktime to see if the older version can read these elusive .mov files. What do you think?

Re: Playing '.mov' files in Quicktime 6.x (Windows XP Pro)

    Two more things to try:

    1. Check the file association once more:

Open My computer or Windows Explorer.
    Select Tools | Folder Options...
Select the File Types tab (yes, I know you've done this already)
Scroll down until you see MOV.
    Click Advanced
Make sure that Open is selected, then click Edit...
Click in the Application... box. then move to the end.
Make sure that the command ends in "%1" including the double quotes. If it ends in %1 without quotes, QT will choke on paths with spaces.

    2. Use the QuickTime control panel to remove the association of .mov with QT, then restore it.

Re: Playing '.mov' files in Quicktime 6.x (Windows XP Pro)

According to Quicktime it is backwards compatable. The newest version 6.3 Pro can read 1.0 version files. So I don't think that will make any difference but who knows. Are you saying that it cannot find any files that you Download from the internet, just the ones you get from Quicktime? Do me a favor and check one of the files that you are having trouble with and see what is Checked under Attributes and then check one that does work and see what Attributes it is using.

Actually, I haven't tried that, but will when I get a chance later today.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: Playing '.mov' files in Quicktime 6.x (Windows XP Pro)

    Hi there Hans...

I did try what you suggested, with no luck. Could it have anything to do with my internet settings in IE, regarding secuirty, etc? Also, I was trying to download an earlier version of Quicktime to see if these files would work on the older version. I tried downloading it from http://oldversion.com , but everytime I tried, it told me that the file couldn't be found. However, I tried this morning on a different computer, and was able to download it easily. I'm really getting frazzled here!

    Any help? Thanks!!!

Re: Playing '.mov' files in Quicktime 6.x (Windows XP Pro)

I assume that you have either downloaded the .mov file to a specific folder, or copied it out of your Temporary Internet Files folder to another folder; in that case, IE doesn't come into it any more. I also assume that you have tried starting the QuickTime player by itself, and to open the .mov file from within the player (File | Open...)

    I'm afraid I'm out of ideas <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15>.

    Hans --

    You are correct on all of your assumptions. <img src=/S/bwaaah.gif border=0 alt=bwaaah width=123 height=15> <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15> <img src=/S/igiveup.gif border=0 alt=igiveup width=31 height=23>

Dave, Do you know anyone who has successfully downloaded and played the files? Could be that they were created by some other app and just use the .mov extension.
