    Create a File Server?

I have an old tower I was thinking about recycling as a small file server. How tough, if at all possible, would it be to hook it up to a stationary standalone notebook for just this purpose? The notebook has 2 USBs, a firewire & a parallel port open.

    Can anything be done here? <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

Just set up a Workgroup network and share the drive(s). Unless you want a "domain" type of of server then your talking a different world.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Hi, Dave ~

Although network ignorant, the former sounds feasible. Would I treat this just as a remote drive? In your experience, how would you suggest connecting the 'file server' to the notebook?

    Hi, Joe ~

Thanks for the link. I went through quite a few pages and used the search feature, but nothing seems to come even close to what I want to do. I don't even know what to technically call what I am trying to do, but if it is possible, shouldn't it be pretty easy?

    Hey Bruce,
Does the tower have an ethernet card ?? How about the notebook ?? If not you would likely be best "served" by a wireless network. But that's just an un-educated guess.

    Hi, Doc ~

The notebook is but I am not sure about the box. If I did that, I would have to hook up a monitor, keyboard, and install an OS then, right? I was hoping just to connect the box to the notebook and run it from the laptop. Is that even possible?

    Re: Create a File Server?

You are going to need some sort of software to control the hard disk and access to it - either an operating system or a smart BIOS of some sort.

If all you need to use is the hard disk, I would have thought your simplest and cheapest solution would be to load an OS which will auto-log on (and won't mind there being no keyboard and mouse) or simply buy a KVM.

A quick search on Google for "convert hard disk external" brings up products like deltrontech who offer "External Enclosures with High-Performance IEEE 1394/ USB Bridge Adapter Built-in to convert 3.5" IDE HDD into External IEEE 1394/ USB 2.0 HDD"

    Hi, Leif ~

Can I load an OS on it from the notebook?

    Re: Create a File Server?

What is the "it" you refer to?

I thought all you wanted was external storage - in which case, why do you want an OS? To my mind, if you 'need' an OS, you may as well run it as another pc.

    Hi, Leif ~

You said I am going to need some sort of software to control the hard disk and access to it - either an operating system or a smart BIOS of some sort. I would like to control the HD primarily, but the floppy and the CD-ROM as well ("it" is the box).

How would I go about connecting it to my notebook to load an OS on it?

    Re: Create a File Server?

It sounds more and more like you want a pc-cum-server on a network!
Load an OS of your choice onto the box (that will allow network access to the drives), hook up a network cable and then use a hot-swappable KVM for when you need to run any maintenance on the box.

A couple of example KVM's are here and here

    Re: Create a File Server?

So I hook up a KVM to the notebook and the tower and then I can load the OS on the box from the box's CD unit from the notebook?

    Re: Create a File Server?

Hang on - the caffeine is kicking in. You're using a notebook, aren't you?!
I don't think a KVM will do the job - you need some 'remote-control' software...

Let's recap: I assume you are looking for a low-cost means of utilizing the spare box, without the excess baggage of an additional mouse, keyboard and monitor - yes?
You want to be able to connect the laptop on the fly and access the HD, CD and floppy in the box.

What OS will you have on the laptop?
Are you happy for the box to be running 24/7?

    Y, Y, Y, OK. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Notebook w/ XP Pro. Tower w/ no K, V, or M. Would like to access and control HD, flop, & CD with/from notebook.

This sounds like a project no one has ever tried, huh?
