Icons Gone Crazy (W98)

I know this has been asked before, but I had to choose between waiting for the search facility to be restored or bothering loungers with a recurring question... My patience having reached its limit, I chose the latter
The fact is Windows ain't displaying icons correctly... This is particularly true with executable files. Most of them are showing icons that correspond to other programs.
I think the solution was in the registry... a number in a key called something like iconcachedll or so, but a registry search for 'iconcache' didn't yield anything.
I appreciate your help.

If I remember correctly, TweakUI has a "repair icons" type option (in the XP version it's in a drop down list under "repair").

Hi, Diegol ~

Open registry editor and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionExplorer

Increase 'Max Cached Icons' to 2000, close registry and reboot.

Diegol, search for the hidden file ShellIconCache and delete it. Bruce's recommendation is also a good idea, but you need to clear out the corruption in the icon cache - the file will regenerate itself. Note that it has no extension, and make sure you search hidden files!

Thanks for all the replies.

I followed Tim's recommendation and it didn't seem to work, at least before I booted. After booting I forgot checking and went straight to Bruce's and Mark's advices. For the first, I couldn't find the 'Max Cached Icons' key. I attach a pic of my registry.
Afterward I deleted ShellIconCache, and a quick check revealed things seem normal now, even before booting.

If someone knows where the key Bruce mentions may be located, I'll appreciate your posting. I'm running Windows 98, if it is of any help (I think Bruce's using XP).

Thank you

Diegol, you can add that key where Bruce noted. It's not there by default, but if you add it the value will override the defaults set by Windows. This particular fix, though, is more suited to correct a problem where the icons seems to refresh/repaint often. If the icons are displaying inappropriately, it likely won't have any effect as far as a fix is concerned.

FYI, that value is good for Windows 98 as well as XP.
