Help won't open (Office 2000 Excel & Word)

When I go into VBA from Word or Excel (Alt-F11), and then click Help or hit F1, the help window apparently opens normally, but I cannot type anything into the text box under the "Wizard" or "Index" tab. If I put the mouse pointer into either of those areas, it takes on the form appropriate to changing the width of a window, and clicking has no effect. This is in a new computer. An installation made the same way in an old computer (soon to be taken away) works okay. I have tried "Detect and Repair" and uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2000, and of course many reboots. I would be very grateful for any help.

Office 2000 uses Internet explorer to browse Help (yuk). It might be that your IE install is giving trouble. Try Detect and repair with the IE setup from control panel.

Thank you, Jan. What you say makes sense, and the repair did indeed find problems with IE. However, the VBA help window still won't work.

Did you, in fact, install the Help files when you installed Office? You might try doing a reinstall and making sure all the help files are selected.

This happens to me in Access, but I don't think I've noticed it in Word or Outlook VBA help. In my case, I think it means that I should not try to learn Access.

But seriously, sometimes HTML Help seems to have difficulties launching all of its parts correctly. If you have updated your installs of the components (e.g., service releases), I'm not sure there's much else you can do but close the window and try popping it up in a different way (e.g., from inside the application instead of the VBE) then Alt+Tab to VBE and hit F1 with the relevant term highlighted. This should take over the working window.

Depending on what part of help isn't working (no, it isn't all one big file), <post#=136442>post 136442</post#> and <post#=45163>post 45163</post#> might be of some help to you.

For me this has happened off and on with Word VBA. It almost seems like a resource issue sometimes, but at others it is truly a mystery. To truly clear the problem without rebooting, I have to end a process (assuming you have Windows 2000 or XP) called MSOHELP.EXE.

If you have Windows 2000 or XP (and maybe ME?) right-click on the task bar and click Task Manager. Click the Processes tab. Select "MSOHELP.EXE", and click End Process.

If you have windows 98 or below, you may find this by pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE, but I'm not sure.

    Then try reopening help.

    Enjoy!!

Re: Help won't open (Office 2000 Excel & Word)

The problem is eliminated at last! I had the problem if I tried to open VBA help after I went into VBA from Word or Excel. I tried going into VBA help from Outlook. It appeared to open normally. Then, I typed a randomly chosen query ("open file") into the Wizard box. Help immediately responded with information about opening files (specific to Outlook), but also a dialog box opened spontaneously, saying something along the lines of "Please wait while Office configures itself.". Then another dialog box came up, asking me to reboot. Now, help is working in VBA when opened from any of those 3 Office applications.

Thank you everyone for all the above replies. Although they did not clear the problem, I am grateful for them all, they were worth a try, and I learned a lot from trying them.
